If You Were God/Goddess | Transit & Infrastructure Sandbox

One issue I see past haymarket is the pinch between state st and the blue line tunnel roof. I’m not sure if the grade exceeds 3% but it’s pretty darn close. There’s also the vertical curve right at the pinch which could cause issues for trains. I believe the photo in the linked post is of the...

It should still be possible to use a TBM beneath the roadway portion of the tunnel

If You Were God/Goddess | Transit & Infrastructure Sandbox

This is an interesting idea! And welcome to the forum, it’s always good to hear fresh ideas on topics that have long been discussed on this board. Having said that, I have a few thoughts. 1. It’s possible you’ve already considered this, but the central artery tunnel is too steep for FRA grade...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I believe the issue, as F-Line had previously stated, is that the Type 10s can’t physically fit within the inner loop of Heath St. I believe they can on the outer loop without stretching into the road but I could be wrong.

    Portland Passenger Rail

Here’s a great aerial showing (from R to L) the construction of both the Veteran’s road bridge (since demolished) and the extant rail bridge, followed by the previous rail bridge. You can clearly see the original southbound wye ROW and the junction towards the center of the old rail bridge.

I think the construction of the Veterans Memorial Bridge necessitated the severing of the southbound portion of the original wye, so they had to realign to the current wye configuration. It also looks like there was never a northbound leg of the wye in the current configuration.

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

Yes. The Readville facility will be for diesel locomotive repair, much like BET on the north side. With the severing of the grand junction during this project, it looks like a south side diesel facility will be entirely necessary (unfortunately). Widett is not planned to have the same...

    Portland Passenger Rail

https://www.pressherald.com/2024/04/19/portlands-amtrak-station-may-move-from-thompsons-point/ (Sorry if it’s paywalled) Interesting to read that most of the passengers who were asked said their biggest concern was parking. In general, this isn’t the goal of relocating the station at all. Most...

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

According to the article, Fred Salvucci convinced her that the layover tracks were unnecessary. Pretty cool to see that he still has sway like that.

    Boston Harbor Flood Protection Projects

I think it’s time top officials at least start floating the idea of a full harbor barrier

    Freeport Village Center

Not one mention of the actual Freeport station in that article. They also seem to blame it being somewhat empty on the fact that it’s set back from Main st… I find that a little hard to believe. I think the new owners should focus on bringing in some bars and restaurants in addition to locally...

    Green Line Reconfiguration

Beautiful work, as always! Quick question: with the revival of the A branch, is the 57 necessary? I could see a short-turned bus pinging between Watertown and Oak Sq (if the A terminates at Oak), but would it really be necessary to have a surface transitway on Comm for it? Not saying it's a bad...

Once in a while the Downeaster takes a detour along the haverhill/reading line instead of crossing over to the Lowell line on the wildcat branch. I’m not sure why the train you’re referring to was detouring, but it’s usually because of scheduled track work that creates constraints for the T...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

I think you're assuming that the BL Charles crossing would need to remain on the same alignment as the Longfellow. There's plenty of room to the north of Charles/MGH to hypothetically build an incline to the required depth to get under the river and one that also ties into the BL station there...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Do you think that tips the scales for a blue line extension westward via Cambridge over Kenmore? Or do you think an urban ring-regional rail connection at Sullivan could pick up a lot of Cambridge-bound traffic from the north side? Maybe even with an additional UR-RR connection at east Somerville
