Kenmore Square North (WHOOP) | 533-541 Commonwealth Ave | Fenway

Because you can't leave the wall up.

You have to cut it into squares and re-assemble it with additional bricks added to accomplish the new floor to floor height/s.

To do this will be INSANELY costly.

They need to do it anyway.

I am saying a facadectomy where the podium floors use 2 floors of the old building for each 1 podium floor. This would be more costly but when you quadruple the height it would also be much more profitable in the long run.

DC hasnt built something this bland in decades

Lol the massing of nearly all newer DC buildings are big blocky turds. Some of the facades are OK but most aren't great with street-level retail and vibrancy. It's much more noticeable in DC when whole neighborhoods like the Navy Yard and NoMA get developed with this type of building and provide surprisingly little retail. Boston does get some examples of similar architecture, but the effect is diluted because they are scattered around existing buildings. Maybe the Seaport has some similarities.

Hey, if UMass can do it, why can't a big fancy developer be forced to do the same by the city with the hottest real estate market in the nation?

Ok, I actually liked the previous version, but this absolutely awful new version has made me realize the flaws of the old version and I now hate that too.

This is all just architecture at its worst.

I feel like the BRA saw the Oct 30 version and figured they better approve i before the next version got even worse.

Losing that street wall is nothing short of catastrophic. Why don't we write a letter and bring it over to Greg Galer, and Alison Frazee – get them to add a few hundred signatures – and bring it over to Brian Golden.

What the heck is this wonderful long-term solution?

The joint statement (or, at any rate, the excerpt provided by the Herald), is akin to being in high school and having a friend tell you that somebody likes you but they can't tell you who...or that they know something important but they're not allowed to say anything about it.

what i got was that Walsh decided

Boston will retain a bit of leeway and not be legally stuck with the Citgo Sign forevermore...

Just want to point out that with the Trump administration's move to recognize Guaido as the President of Venezuela that the Citgo sign is no longer tainted by ownership by the Maduro regime. Carry on.

Was there some new crisis of legitimacy about the Citgo sign among a small group of people that I've been unaware of? The Venezuelan government has been problematic for decades.

I'm not sure I follow your line of reasoning that the recognition of Guaido by Trump does anything to affect the alleged "taint" of the sign in Boston.

For one, Maduro persecuted the Citgo board members, so the company is hardly an avatar of the regime in Boston. Additionally, the Venezuelan controlling share of Citgo has been put up as collateral in return for Russian loans, so depending on what happens in VE Citgo may not be a Venezuelan controlled company for long...

Carry on though.

So it may end up being controlled by the evil Russians???

Well yes there is that, but there is at lest now a 30% chance Citgo could end up being used to actually help rebuild Venezuela. Or yes more likely just fund Putin's Kleptocracy if the evil Russians take over

Either way it is still idiotic to keep the Citgo sign as the Citgo sign.

Site is being fenced off so I'm assuming site prep/demo is about to begin.

now i get to live, in real-time, a contemporary example of the nonsense that prompts me and others to, whenever going through 'dirty old boston' or reading 'lost boston' etc., say, "wow, why did they tear that down? people are so stupid."

Windows and interiors will be removed next week, with significant demo starting the 19th, might be pushed back to the 26th.
