Northeastern University - Institutional Master Plan

Reverend-P, great photo set. Thanks for sharing.

The city should take a few notes; this is how you effectively throw money at a problem.

So much truth in these words...

The way they made the bridge a flowing extension of the architecture on site vs a tacked on addition really makes it an integral part of the overall project thats supposed to be there vs just being something thats also there. The landscape effortlessly leads you to the bridge allowing both sides to really become connected though still separated by the OL trench. It no longer matters that the trench is there and its honestly better because of it.

All the way on the left, 2 plots over from the ISEC where it shows a soccer field, is that whats going to go in there? Right now its a massive dirt lot that looks like its prepped for something.

Here's a sneak peek at the ISEC 2 I found on payette's website

That is the expanded and rebuilt Carter Field, a joint project between Northeastern and the City of Boston. You must be looking at Google maps because it was completed last September and is very impressive.

This makes me wish that the MBTA had allowed Northeastern to build the other half of the ARC.

Seeing the wooden handrails in detail confirms for me that they are long term temporary barriers. They will likely stay in place until ISEC II/EXP is completed.

That looks like a budget cut.

The view of this from the gym (squashbusters).

While BU mailed it in, NU has become a very nice fixture of Boston.

Why do you think NU doesnt have the reputation of a BU, BC? I heard it started off as a very average commuter school, but now its become very good. People outside of Boston dont really know about it but imo its probably our best campus in Boston city limits.

As a Umass Boston alum I expect a somewhat similar situation. Umass Boston has always been the redheaded stepchild of Umass schools, but I feel now that the dorms are up and the science complex, university hall.. etc its going to become a much more desirable school. With the new buildings and location on the waterfront with skyline views, the harbor point neighborhood right there, and kennedy library etc its becoming pretty nice vs before when it was a purely brutalist nightmare and only a commuter school with no soul. Theres been a ton of changes recently and some more dorms are in the pipeline and I feel with the changes and especially harbor point development in 20 years it will be higher up on the totem pole of Umass schools.

BU and BC also started out as very average commuter schools. They made that transition to residential campuses a generation before Northeastern did.

Stick, this is no longer true. Northeastern is one of the most popular schools in the country. According to this, it received the 14th most applications of any college or university in the country.

Not sure you were responding to my post. But in the case that you were; while BU's recent campus architecture and improvements appear to me to have languished, NU's recent improvements have been great and impressive. :)

UMass Boston is always going to be hamstrung by politics and lack of funding, however noble its intentions.

Not that it means anything, but BC, BU, and Northeastern are all within 10 rankings in US News this year. All trail Tufts and Brandeis, along with (duh) Harvard and MIT.

I took a walk through the campus yesterday evening. The bridge came out beautifully! I couldn't stop gushing to my friend about our alma mater: "Look at how big it's gotten--our baby is growing up!"

At least BU is keeping in line with its position as a Center of Excellence for Bad Architecture. Their planned Data Science monstrosity will cement that standing for decades.

The covered bike parking area under the bridge is a nice touch, I was happy to see that. They have a weird tendency to put bike racks at the top of stairs at Northeastern making them just difficult to use.

Is there a ramp onto that bridge, tho? All I see on the Huntington side is a staircase.
