Unbuilt railroads

Jeeze, that would have turned Boston into something like Chicago as a sorting hub. Not that Boston would have ever seen the traffic for it.

I remember seeing this a while ago. Still in awe at the planned size of the Needham Yard. That would've been a sight to see.

Where the hell is southie ^? I see its before the back bay was filled in and I know Southie had tidal flats but nothing is there. That side of downtown is completely open to the harbor, no southie, no channel, no south bay.

This is a thread for maps of unbuilt railroads, starting with: https://archives.lib.state.ma.us/handle/2452/50593

I really would love to have this map (or something similar) on my wall. I found an awesome Boston sewer map that was the exact same dimensions, looks like the same cartographer, as this one.

This map makes me realize how sad it is that housing was allowed to be developed on Furnace Brook Parkway - it clearly was meant to be a wide greenway. What a mistake.

And stick, I think that Tewksbury map is inaccurate as far as South Boston is concerned. There’s no date on it, but given that Lowell and Lawrence are on it, we’re at least mid-late 19th C.

I can't get over the number of proposed wye junctions in that first map. Like, I think I see a dozen? Imagine the operational permutations...

Here is a plan for a New York City to North Station railroad line. Details on this are at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_and_Boston_Rapid_Transit_Company

It's the red line that cuts through Brookline, runs about a block from the Grand Junction in Cambridge, then cuts across the east side of East Cambridge:

The Milford-Tewksbury map must date to the late 1860s. The Charles River Railroad became the BH&E Woonsocket Division in 1865, and the Framingham-Sterling Junction line became the BC&F in 1867. The Milford & Woonsocket was completed from Milford to Bellingham Junction in 1868, and Milford to Ashland (along a similar alignment to that proposed here) in 1869. Oddly enough, the "M & M" shown between Milford and Woonsocket was never built.

I actually mapped out the Eastern Terminal Railway a while back. It doesn't look like it was anything other than one guy's Crazy Transit Pitch (1915 edition!) - there's no other record of it.

There should be a thread for google maps creations and kmls that don’t fit in crazy transit pitches or the other threads.
