Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

I guess it's better than the subterranean remains of Penn Station. Sadly, the new Moynihan Train Hall has all the grace and elegance of an indoor shopping mall. Did Alexander Cassatt just roll over again?

    Boston Population Trends & Discussion

Until Boston's educational and cultural institutions move to Phoenix, there shouldn't be cause for concern.

WBZ-TV/CBS Studio Development Project | 1170-2000 Soldiers Field Road | Allston

That sentiment was shared by those who expected Boomtown to fail within a year of its debut. Rex Trailer describes the history of the show in the video below. (He does not mention, however, that the outdoor set was burned down by some Native Americans who found the show offensive.)

The auxiliary tower for WBZ(AM) was dismantled in October to make way for the new studio complex.

    What makes a good plaza?

A great plaza is one that affords an escape from motorized traffic and stimulates people-watching. Rockefeller Center in New York, arguably the most successful plaza in the country, employs multiple levels to create an inviting space in which to watch others shop, skate, linger, or just walk...

    How does Boston's urbanism compare?

Consider the row comprising seven townhouses below. They were built two years after the contemporary houses on Brooklyn's State Street. Perhaps you'd consider them to be apropos of a Disney theme park, but I'd not want anything more modern-looking on this West Village block.

    How does Boston's urbanism compare?

What this Street View snapshot does not show are the late-Italianate/Renaissance Revival brownstones on the block. While the well-preserved 19th-century "State Street Houses" retain most of their original detail, the 14 new townhouses (built in 2007) are bereft of ornamentation and seemingly...

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

Perhaps MassDOT thinks East-West Passenger Rail will just go away if it's studied ad infinitum. From MassLive: MassDOT's million-dollar East-West rail final report overdue; 'There comes a point where you have to just get the work done'

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Not completely meaningless. While there are too many transgressors, those who prefer to avoid wearing a body cast stay on the walkers' side. In any case, the new GLX high bridge could draw elevated traffic levels, so to speak, should it become a destination.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

A painted stripe separates the Brooklyn Bridge walkway between foot and bike traffic. Will there be a similar dichotomy on the new GLX viaduct?

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

It will undoubtedly afford spectacular views. Some in city government might want to transform the path into a revenue-generating attraction. 🤑

Is it an optical illusion or is the path really four stories up?

Regional New England Rail (Amtrak & State DOT & NEC)

Amtrak's Vermonter is now limited to service between WAS and NYP. (The leg to NHV has been severed.) While Amtrak has yet to post the foregoing change among its "adjustments," the Vermonter no longer appears beyond New York on the schedule. Perhaps the train should be rechristened the New Yorker.

The FCC requires stations to identify their call letters and COL hourly. Call signs are not used to measure audience levels in PPM markets, however. Thus, stations market their brand nowadays (e.g., "92.5 The River," "Rock 92.9," "Magic 106.7," and suchlike). As a result, many young listeners...

Abandoned railroads and rights of way

According to a report in MassLive, the abandoned Clinton railroad tunnel may become a cool link in the Mass Central Rail Trail: This old abandoned train tunnel in Clinton could soon become the crowning jewel of the Mass. Central Rail Trail. (Be sure to view the accompanying video.)

Ethnic Words & Usage (Yiddish, for example)

Times have changed to the degree that the words schmuck and putz seem to have gained acceptance. (Both mean penis.) Given your lineage, you may recall (with some amusement) Alfonse D'Amato's calling Chuck Schumer a "putzhead" in 1998—a gaffe that may have contributed to D'Amato's defeat that year.
