50 Post Office Sq (Fomer Verizon Building Tower)

Re: Verizon Building Tower

The inventory sheet on MACRIS doesn't say whether the now removed detailing over the door was original or not (I suspect the latter, it looks too cheap). It does talk a lot about the lobby mural they removed and its significance, so yeah. Yay the continuing degradation of Boston's historic buildings!

Here's a pic of it going up in '47, when PO square was still predominately parking. Also check out the smoke belching out of the factories in Southie in the background.

Re: Verizon Building Tower

That shot is a sad reminder that the erosion of Boston's urban fabric in favor of the car didn't begin with the Central Artery or the West End.

Re: Verizon Building Tower

People used to use that as a reason to build highways, to get cars off the streets. They didn't understand induced demand back then.

Re: Verizon Building Tower

Well, I was thinking about the surface parking really. But the solution for that - garages - effectively achieved what the highways did.

Re: Verizon Building Tower

What was on Post Office Square before that surface lot ? (For that matter, what building was here before New England Telephone?)

Buildings, I think.

Re: Verizon Building Tower

Not related to this per se, but we just received an internal notification that 6 Bowdoin Sq is currently on the market.

So if anybody is interested in buying one of the few true art deco buildings in Boston, now's your chance.

We haven't been given any details of the listing if anyone has the capability of getting their hands on commercial listings....

Re: Verizon Building Tower

Where is Verizon going to run its downtown operations if they sell both Postoffice Square and Bowdoin Square? I thought the mural and museum were supposed to move to Bowdoin.

Re: Verizon Building Tower

The floors with the switching equipment (COs) will be leased back to the company.

The mural was never going to Bowdoin (it's too big there is no space in Bowdoin to accommodate it).

As for the museum, it hasn't been mentioned, but I would guess it's fate is murky. The company is on a big 'looking forward, not back' kick.

Verizon has had office space in the lower floors of 125 High Street.

And my guess is that all the relays and switching equipment are being transferred to a captive Delaware corporation for nominal consideration for lease back to the company to try to take advantage of the "stock in trade" personal property tax exemption in Chapter 59.

Re: what was originally on PO Sq.

I know it was first built after the Great Fire so the fire department could have enough space to stage their equipment in front of the PO/Courthouse in case there was ever another "Great Fire." I think it just included the triangle north of Milk St though. Not sure if it extended south at all pre-parking lot, or if it was ever extended in that era.

50 Post Office Square, formerly known as the New England Telephone HQ at 185 Franklin

The art deco tower / NET Headquarters / 50 Post Office Square / 185 Franklin, whatever.

I was out with a realtor the other week and he mentioned that this building is undergoing conversion to condos. He specifically mentioned "hundreds" of units in the works, but I've not been able to find any information on it. Here is what I've found so far:

2009 BRA submission for project expansion:
http://www.bostonredevelopmentautho...5 Franklin Street/185 Franklin Street_PNF.pdf

2011 boston.com article on the building with gallery:
http://www.boston.com/business/arti...tower_in_post_office_square_getting_makeover/
www.boston.com/business/gallery/185franklin

Jan 2013 Globe article:
http://www.bostonglobe.com/business...al-district/fYWGa1l21WHF4gZQLM7tsI/story.html

Their website, updated May 2013, I think:
http://www.50po.com/

Since I wasn't able to find any real information, does anyone here know anything about this or can confirm?

Everything we know about the project is in this thread.

Re: Verizon Building Tower

Nothing fun.

The roof leaks like a sieve, they finally got budget approval to fix it.

Re: Verizon Building Tower

That building was for sale for the longest time but no buyers.

Not sure what the price/stipulations were though and I wouldn't be surprised to learn it might be filled with asbestos.
