Big Dig Tunnel--

Wouldn't photo cells (like we use in every building) be the smart solution here? Only on when needed, and dimmed as appropriate based on light levels.

The orange daylight lights in the tunnels are currently low pressure sodium tubes, which take several minutes to warm up. If the upcoming tunnel lighting replacement is LED then they'd have a lot more flexibility in how the lighting is diffused.

I doubt "as needed" really applies to any of the Boston tunnels, though. Traffic is steady 24/7 including wee hours of the morning, so the only settings they have to get right are dusk & dawn.

This popped up on YouTube tonight. Originally broadcast on May 7, 2000. Interesting look back before the big dig was completed.
A bit early in the Holiday Season -- but Robert Burns ode springs to my mind after watching that video [first for the loss of Charles' CBS Morning rambles] and more significantly since its been nearly 2 decades since that magnificent field of cranes was visible where the Seaport has now risen

so here it goes:
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne*?

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Auld Lang Syne
