This new site ...BLDUP ... is anyone on this? It looks like someone trying to duplicate the archBoston community ... for profit.

Any thoughts?

The issue with ArchBoston is the requirement to look through multiple pages of commentary in order to find renders and construction pictures. If there was a way to see the most current renders at the top of pages at ArchBoston it would make this site better.

+1.

My two cents would be that BLDUP just tracks development and posts pics but doesn't have much in the way of a forum or interactive element. Skyrisecities is trying to be something like Archboston, SSP, and SSC with a mix of the forum section and then also the development news section.

I was wondering this too. He or she has been posting consistent project updates/pics here so they are much welcomed IMO.

I am suggesting that he/she is posting to pull ABers to their site. Which is fine ... I just think its good to be aware that this particular poster is probably posting to drive BLDUP's pageviews up in order to be more profitable.

If its better ... its better and so be it.

I agree with you on the reason cca. I wouldn't however say the content is better in any way just different with a different focus based around spectating development versus actively commenting as happens here.

And this thread is probably helping to drive more of our viewers to his/her site.

The BLDUP people seem sincere in their interest to spread the word about development while making money. I wouldn't consider them trying to mimic this site since their goal is to be nationwide, not just Boston. Perhaps the idea came from this site, but they're not the only ones out there now trying to monetize this sort of space. CoUrbanize is, to a certain extent, as well. The business model is untested, though. Why would developers want to pay for placement on their sites? How else do you make any money, except advertising?

Glad this was brought up and thanks cca since im sure many of us were thinking about this. I didn't know it was a for profit site - and even without that bit of knowledge, there is something off putting about the constant self promoting links by bldup on here of late - although I do appreciate the pics, can't lie there. Oh well. Not sure what to make of it.

What exactly is the problem that people are seeing? They're not "competing" with ArchBoston because they're not a forum (when Rifleman and Westie start posting there, we can reevaluate that). I see no evidence that they're stealing or using information posted here. Actually, the website is nicely done and is a great source for renders, construction pics, maps, etc - in a way that AB isn't and probably couldn't be. I appreciate what they've done. As John said, I do have to wonder what it is they're selling and who they're selling to... but so what?

tl;dr:

I, for one, welcome our new BLDUP overlords.

It would be nice if they would self-enforce on themselves the Reddit rule that you have to make a contribution to the forum or add to the discussion before you can self promote.

Yeah, it was determined that BLDUP was an SEO bot, not an actual poster. While they did post some valid info, more and more of their posts were just repetitive info on stuff that was already posted.

BLDUP has incredibly comprehensive coverage of all sorts of small to mid-sized urban projects in the area. I'll have to start referencing them more, the volume of their updates is really quite impressive.

Everywhere I look in the suburbs---They are building on ever possible lot---
We are ripping up all the TREES left in the suburbs just to make a buck.
Very sad what is going on now--

Agree and disagree. They have incredible detail on some projects, such as news when permits are pulled. But there are some projects they claim are still under construction that have been completed for over a year.
