The Sudbury (Bulfinch Crossing Residential Tower) | 50 Sudbury St | GCG Phase I | Gov't Center

i'm surprised to hear (read) the above. granted, this is absolutely one of those buildings that looks better in person than in pictures, but i think the facade is cool and unlike any on a high-rise in boston. not only does it look nothing like the kensington or 45 stuart, but it has drastically (obviously so) different materials making up the cladding.

Is it possible our opinion was skewed by cheerleaders?
Is (not great) more close to reality?
i'm thinking it matches the JFK fairly well. Did that have anything to do with the cladding chosen?

I think it's just that time in the build cycle of this project when the naysayers make an appearance. Literally happens with almost every development.

This building is far better than the Kensington and, while unlikely to win any awards, the facade has plenty of depth and relief. It's a great addition to this part of the city and a major improvement over what was there before.

Sometimes I think people comment without actually seeing the projet in person. The garage is a colossal mistake and it's great to see it going away.

I like the facade: clean, sharp, crisp, nice contrast both with the fenestration and with surrounding buildings. It will make a nice foil to subsequent development. The garage has become an albatross and few are unhappy to see it go. Yet, just for some context, when it was built (for a couple of dollars parking per day) it was a great boon to downtown. It enabled many to get off the expressway and park fairly close to business and government, without having to trek to the other huge garages under the Common and at the Pru. Even the building of extra floors on top for offices indicated its desirability at the time. Only as Quincy Market became a massive draw and redevelopment shifted closer to Haymarket did the garage seem increasingly to be "in the way" of progress as illustrated by the big dig and the Greenway. And when the construction economy improved the Bulfinch Triangle and TD Garden projects finally took off, restoring much of the street grid and filling in blank spaces, did it become obvious that the garage had to go or at least be truncated and hidden behind more worthy architecture.

One of the best aspects of this new tower is that it shifts your focus away from the hideous JFK building. I've always disliked that building, even at an early age.

I kind of like the JFK tower(s). The lowrise is horrible both visually and in terms of ground level interaction.

Cladding is moving fast! Cant wait until the top quarter of the tower becomes more glassy and ties it all in.

Nice backdrop against the Climate Protest today in City Hall Plaza.
