The Comm. Ave. Bridge located over a portion of the Mass Pike is scheduled to be replaced.
The project will take at least two summers to complete (Link below).

It will be done in 2 segments. The first one will take place during this coming summer. The 2nd one will take place next summer.

The DOT is advising motorists, MBTA commuters GL & commuter rail riders to seek alternate routes around that area while construction is ongoing. The T will also be affected, since the B Line to Boston College operates across the bridge.

The portion of the Mass Pike under the bridge will also be affected in that area. :(

By my very quick count, there are no fewer than 10 Red Sox home games during this 17 day span. Traffic is a nightmare heading East on the Pike from the Allston tolls to the Back Bay exits on game nights. I can't even fathom what it will be like with 2 lanes closed on the Pike. Hopefully the T adds even more service for games.

Well, they won't be adding the service via the B line!

I remember part of the Mass Pike being narrowed to one lane not too long ago on the westbound side about 1/3 into the Pru Tunnel.

And this was at night! But Comm Ave has seen some heavy construction activity since around last month at night and during the day. I'll stay away from that area until that work is done!

You'll be avoiding Comm Ave for a couple years then...

I'm under the impression that between the 2 closings, traffic would be allowed to use the area on a limited basis. I could be wrong though.

My prediction is that they might put up a temporary bridge.

You said to avoid the heavy construction on Comm Ave that is occurring every day. That mostly is unrelated to the bridge closing. That construction is Comm Ave Phase 2A (the bridge is 2B). Phase 2A will be constant construction now through summer 2019. Generally not closing the road, and certainly not for 2 weeks like the bridge replacement, but typically reductions in lanes overnight.

As described at the groundbreaking last fall, "major work begins in the spring", which is what you've been seeing the last month.

Still, I'm not going that way. They should be doing that late at night, NOT in the early evening where traffic use is still during peak hours.

It is so ridiculous to have to come through there at 9 in the evening and only one lane is open until you get pass that area!

This should be fun. I get to learn new and exciting ways to drive around the city. Can't wait.

I would imagine that the Mass Pike will be split up.

While one side of the bridge is being dismantled, the opposite side will carry 4 lanes to keep traffic moving.

Also, the speed limit may be reduced.

Haha as opposed to what? The bridge collapsing and never getting replaced?
Running so far behind schedule that the bridge isn't done by September 1st sounds like a particularly nightmarish scenario.

True, really by Labor Day though. They've done some of these bridge jobs pretty seamlessly (the one over the tracks on Morton Street was amazing) but this one is obviously much more complicated.

Does anyone have an educated guess as to how much it would cost to screw the idea of building over this segment of the Pike and just decking over the section between the bridge and Carlton Street? What about between Carlton St and St. Mary's? Like, just a deck, not even landscaping?

The present bridge is NOT in any danger of collapsing. The DOT just wants to replace it so that its integrity can be brought back up to today's standards - as it was some 53 years ago when it was first built.

Almost similar to the Longfellow Bridge, but which is still open for the Red Line to use.
