The Druker lecture celebrating design and architecture was established in 2001 to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of The Druker Company and its three generations of development and philanthropy in the City of Boston; as well as to commemorate the family's longstanding relationship with the Boston Public Library, dating back to the early twentieth century when John Druker built the Orient Heights branch library in East Boston which in 1986 was donated to the city by his grandson, Ronald, who runs the company today.

The goal of the endowed lecture series is to "explore and share with the broadest audience an understanding and appreciation of the various facets of design and architecture in the urban environment. This series shall commemorate the Druker family's beginning in the Boston real estate world in 1901." While since 2002, the lecture has not occurred annually for a variety of reasons, the prior presenters have been: Robert A.M. Stern, Maya Lin, Thom Mayne, and Moshe Safdie.

The lecture series has been acclaimed as to its successfully providing the broader Boston community with the opportunity to be exposed to world acclaimed designers and their work. This year the tradition will continue as Liz Diller will deliver the Druker Lecture.

Elizabeth Diller is a founding principal of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts. DS+R’s projects include the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the Lincoln Center expansion and renovation, the High Line in New York, the Museum of Image and Sound in Rio de Janeiro, the Blur Building in Switzerland, the Broad Museum in Los Angeles, and the recently awarded Columbia University Business School. DS+R are recipients of the MacArthur Foundation “genius” award, the National Design Award from the Smithsonian, the Brunner Prize from the American Academy of the Arts and Letters, and numerous AIA awards. Ms. Diller is a Professor of Architecture at Princeton University.

This program is part of the Boston Public Library’s Building Boston initiative, a citywide celebration of Boston’s public spaces.

^^ No topic that I've been able to ascertain, Ron.

The irony of Druker sponsoring a lecture on Architecture kills me.

And then there's this little factoid:

the family's longstanding relationship with the Boston Public Library, dating back to the early twentieth century when John Druker built the Orient Heights branch library in East Boston which in 1986 was donated to the city by his grandson, Ronald, who runs the company today.

I learned to read in this building. WTF?
