MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

Hopefully Cambridge realizes that the extra height and development brings more money and business and then more taxes and retains more talent. Maybe these towers warm them up to the idea of pushing for a much greater skyline. Id love to see some friendly competition between Cambridge and Boston. Almost the entirety of Kendall is allowed 1000ft by the FAA, the more I think of it the more Id love to see our tallest across the river like the Shard in London. It would be pretty unique for an American skyline and would look awesome. Its not gonna happen in Boston, but maybe that ends up being a good thing. Well see.

I think if the Grand Junction right of way was providing a secondary mass transit option (light rail, indigo CR service, or BRT) running in the perpendicular direction from the Red Line then this would be a vision easier to realize. As it is they are planning on pushing density pretty high for just having one transit option in Kendall compared with downtown Boston which has 2, 3 or even 4 lines converging where they are going or already have gone taller.

Few more from Saturday night

I fucking love the heatsink and for once I'm annoyed a building isn't taller.

Will they go for another tall dorm on the Eastgate site after it comes down,

or possibly upscale whatever is planned?

I thought the current plan is the replace Eastgate with Building #2 (Not tall or dorm). Early rendering up thread @ item #295.

^^ahh yes. Thanks for the refresh.

I just dug through this whole thread, do we know what exactly is supposed to be replacing eastgate?

Something like this:

Oh. Gross. It'd be nice if they picked something that would fill in the skyline a bit better for that location. Eastgate is no architectural marvel but it's silhouette has definitely carved out a recognizable part of the skyline.

Ground level looks good. The building is kind of so-so.
A few additional floors of dorm space would have been a home run.

I work in Kendall Square and I don't think I ever realized until this picture just how close these two cantilevered buildings will be to each other. Kind of looks like a pile of blocks to me now.

Its so cool how its a “regular” glass building from some angles like head on, but then the panels on the side line up with the red matching the the colors of other buildings near by. As you look at it from different angles the facade completely changes, if you look at it from the side this front face will appear to be a red wall.

That's what it looks like -- duh!

I didn't really see heat sink in the building at first

but there are a lot of designs for heat sinks

Oh and one more for the architects to steal -- perhaps for the new MIT Schwarzman College of Computing
