New Ideas for the Site

I say do it -- it would also be handy for those who cannot find a thread they're looking for instead of creating a new one. That will avoid threads like this: "Hey, where is the X thread? It isn't coming up in a search! Here's a photo dump."

Also, the Bankers & Tradesman thread should really be moved here to the Announcements forum.

The B&T ordeal was very serious. It's at the top of the developments so that when people go to post a new development or in a development thread, they know not to post a full B&T article.

Thanks guys. I'll give it a shot and see how it works out.

TBH, I think it's mostly background noise at this point. I don't really notice it. I don't really even notice my thread which is also stickied and out of date.

Maybe if it was one singular rules thread, which could within that stress that point. I feel it is oddly specific that it names B&T, and I imagine you must need a subscription for B&T. Which I would imagine only a couple of our members have, though I could be wrong. It could easily be dealt with if it pops up with a delete or edit and a PM.

Tbh too I haven't seen anyone post B&T articles in general anymore. I think those users have since left.

Maybe I'm being paranoid but does it seem like discussion is slow today compared to recent activity?

I really hope people aren't shying away from posting because of the new thread. :/

There's been a lot of negativity & name calling recently in various threads. It has honestly led me to just ignore those threads and take a bit of a break from aB because there's no other good discussion happening.

I culled the Aquarium thread (a bit too late I think) but I'll try to keep an eye out for anything else.

Definitely are.

Activity here is always up and down. Remember how much things slowed a few months after the economy bottomed out in the recession? There was almost nothing going on and none of the projects going on were starting. Lots of proposals and approved projects, but nothing moving and almost no discussion. Activity is still way up from that.

I used to post a lot and have been busy with getting married, job searching, moving, and life. It's also the last week of summer; people are vacating and such. I'm sure more than a few people are also on Sept 1st leases and looking for a new place / packing.

Did you know that in Options (click the down arrow from Quick Links at the top of the page) you can opt to show up to 50 posts per page?

I never knew. Until now.

This revolutionizes my aB reading.

Yeah, it's a great setting for desktop, but not optimal for mobile browsing. Can really chew up data in threads with tons of pictures.

*Opens "Boston Skyline Photos" thread with 50 posts/page*

I'll see you guys in January when my computer cools off.

Can we get Like/Dislike buttons?

Twitter share buttons?

Favorite stars (to bookmark posts we want to come back and refer to)? [And yes, I realize this can be done through the browser]

I assume the answer is probably not... just checking!

A like/dislike button would be amazing. With enough dislikes a post could be hidden, just like reddit. Therefore we wouldn't have to deal with some of the off topic height fetishes of some people on this forum.

I don't know if vBulletin constrains this, but it would be cool if the website's graphics were updated a little. A nice backround and some new fonts and colors would really help. I mean, it is a design website.

In the development projects section, could we have neighborhood development threads that worked as such:

  • A single neighborhood development thread’s first post is a map of the region in discussion with parcels highlighted that are either proposed/approved, under construction, or completed, with a different color corresponding to each category

  • Each parcel that is marked is linked to the specific thread dedicated to that parcel
I think this will help clear up a lot of confusion about parcels/projects, for example people confusing Longfellow Place, Hub on Causeway, Congress Street Garage.

Further, it will help organize and direct user’s posts (photos or otherwise) to the correct thread. Another example of two threads getting confused are the Pier 4 Office Tower and Pier 4 Condo Building.

Finally, it will help to show progress (or lack thereof) for that area. Tracking the buildup of the New Balance Complex or Assembly Row is interesting over the long term.

Neighborhoods that I have in mind for this post are areas specific to heavy development, not say, Beacon Hill, for example. A list of what I’m thinking:
  • New Balance Complex
  • Assembly Row
  • NorthPoint
  • Fan Pier
  • Seaport Square
  • Ink Block Area
  • Bulfinch Triangle
  • CSX/Allston Yards (whenever that starts)

And unrelated, maybe each individual development thread can have a stickied first post that shows the latest rendering of a project and it’s specific location on a map.

Can we possibly have renders added to the first post of each project so we don't have to scroll through each page to find out what a building is supposed to look like?

A soundtrack option for each thread starter. I imagine the "Piper At The Gates of Dawn" album for a Whiggy thread.
