Roxbury’s first residential tower planned for Dudley Square
Yawu Miller | 6/24/2015, 10:24 a.m.

The black-led development team seeking to build an office and residential complex in Dudley Square has pulled the wraps off their design, and it’s big.

Rising from the limestone façade of the Institution for Savings in Roxbury and its Vicinity, the steel and glass tower in the rendering from Stull and Lee architects would stand 25 stories above Washington Street and include 392,355 square feet of commercial, office and residential space. If completed according to plan, the building will be the tallest ever built in Roxbury.

Wow! I guess this proves Boston is in the midst of a development boom. (nothwithstanding Millenium Tower, 4 Season's Tower,TD Garden developments,Fenway developments,Copley Place Tower (just approved!), etc.,etc. The ONLY thing that could steal our thunder now is if Cambridge approves a plan to build a 1000' tower in Kendall Square. (how DARE they even think of such a thing)

Re: Dudley Square Residential Tower | Washington St. | Roxbury

Nice. Dudley Square could really become something with more height/density.

Nice, I really like the massing.

Now if it only had some real rapid transit...

"If completed according to plan, the building will be the tallest ever built in Roxbury"

So now it seems Fenway, Longwood, and Mission Hill aren't part of Roxbury. It seems they're only included when it helps make a point.

Uh, Fenway & Longwood are not part of Roxbury. Roxbury begins on the other side of Huntington.

LOL @ using maps before Boston was filled in to prove a point. Can't knock the hustle

Re: Dudley Square Residential Tower | Washington St. | Roxbury

Does anyone know the exact address/parcel for this?

It's exciting news.

Historically they are, and the City still uses these former boundaries for a various things.

According to your map, Everett is still part of Malden. Things change:

Boston Neighborhoods

There is obviously debate over where Roxbury begins and ends today (as there is no longer a municipality called Roxbury), but that BRA map is the closest thing to correct that exists. It has the Southwest Corridor as the border between Roxbury and Fenway/Mission Hill.

Not sure why that is funny. Since Roxbury is now part of Boston proper, it doesn't really have tangible borders as it once did. But, in all reality, the borders as they existed when annexed would be the actual borders of a place known as Roxbury.

Based on the provided map Longwood is clearly a part of Roxbury, while the Fenway is questionable. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5a/1871_Boston_map_by_H._F._Walling_&_Orm_Gray.jpg

This map helps tie the other together better. Includes fill, but still shows the Muddy River, which formed the border between Roxbury and Brookline.

Re: Dudley Square Residential Tower | Washington St. | Roxbury

This is getting silly. Longwood and Fenway are no more a part of Roxbury than BU is in Brookline. 150 year old maps are fun to look at, but aren't relevant.

+1.

If you are in Peabody and you tell people you are in Danvers, you are wrong. You would have been right 150 years ago, but today, you would be wrong.

If you are in Everett and you tell people you are in Malden, you are wrong. You would have been right 150 years ago, but today, you would be wrong.

If you are in Fenway Park, sitting in the bleachers, and you tell people you are in Brookline, you are wrong. You would have been right 150 years ago, but today, you would be wrong.

Exactly, otherwise the people in Maine would still be from Massachusetts.

Re: Dudley Square Residential Tower | Washington St. | Roxbury

Looking at the rendering, looks like a facadectomy.

Good or bad news depending on how you feel about such things.

It may be silly, and you can use words like wrong all you want. The difference being, Roxbury is now an abstract idea of a "neighborhood". The lines of it's real self haven't changed because it was absorbed.

All your references above are not apt as in all those situations both places still exist with real borders. Peabody and Danvers both exist. Everett and Malden both exist with real borders. Brookline has different borders since then.

So suck it cool interwebs know-it-alls. If you lived in Roxbury 80 years ago, and are still alive, your "neighborhood" borders are still as they always were. Just because other "neighborhoods" have popped up. Field's Corner or Savin Hill are neighborhoods in their own right, but not much argument that they are indeed in Dorchester.

Point is, if you're in Longwood and tell someone you're in Roxbury, no you're not wrong. No matter what the BRA's latest map might say.

Off topic enough out of me for one day.
