The "Little Apple", a skinny little island in the East River between Mahhattan and Queens, accessible by among other things, the tram. I'd love for the area around Parcel 25 in the Mission Hill flats to look like this, except with good integration with the rest of the city instead of the river views.

Wilkommen! RI is very international, being near the UN HQ and housing many of its workers.

A community bulletin board, something I don't see often in skyscraper land:

Main street. RI is largely car-free.

An open air theatre outside a big apartment building. This seems like a soap box moment waiting to happen.

In a world without cars, density and nature can coexist:

They must be publishing books here, because this is one very random house [/crap humor]:

This place is a good idea...but wait, all the stores went out.

Roosevelt Island is the most bizzar place in all of New York City. There really is no reason to go there if you don't live there and the place is rather depressing if you ask me.

I think the strangest place in NYC is Broad Channel:

You are right about RI being kinda desolate and certainly no reason to go except to live there or (in my case) out of curiosity. This gives me pause when I think the Mission Flats area should get built like RI, but I think RI's desolate because of its geographical isolation, not because of its architectural style. I did see lots of kids playing there, so it probably does succeed as a good place to raise a family.
