The Official Rant, Rave, Bitch, & Moan Thread

I think you may be getting Dude confused with Bosdev. Dude is in college, Bosdev has actually developed his own property. He can act a little immature at times but he is an adult.

My development experience is limited, but I was involved with subdivision financing and was the gc for several 2-family homes. The lawsuits that came out of that make me warn any and all to consider doing some soul searching before going all in on a project of that magnitude.

Two things bother me about certain posts:
1. Symbols and letter combinations that are "au courant" among those who text message, but about which I, for one, am almost completely oblivious (e.g. upside-down "v" or IMO, etc.)
2. Using the name of Jesus Christ as a mere expression of anger, disgust, surprise, or emphasis. Some people on the forum, such as myself, are offended. (vulgarity, however, does not offend me).

In my opinion, this thread detracts from the quality of the forum. Rather than channeling old arguments to a more appropriate place, it seems to be creating new disputes.

If people stopped treating it as a thread to say stupid shit and used it as a way to resolve disputes started in other thread, it would serve its purpose. However, it is doing just what I thought it would. It it taking those disputes out of an area where there are peers trying to mediate and bring the discussion back, resulting in a free for all where everyone blurts out stupid complaints and whines, and there aren't well-wishing people trying to push the discussion back to sanity.

The solution? Go back to an environment with peer regulation and no moderator.

Sure, people say stupid shit. They're people. I say stupid shit. I would however like to think that most of the time my comments, however vulgar or offensive, are pertinent to the topic at hand. Or, at the very least, I am making clear my annoyance with a person or a person's comment because his posts or opinions are illogical or ridiculous. Maybe I'm doing so in an ad-hominem way or a way that is offensive to a degree, but that's my personality. You deal with offensive people all the time in life, deal with it, that's my way of making a point.

What we need is to get rid of the moderator and let people sort themselves out. Having an administrator is all we need, someone to respond if people complain about a person who is being obscenely offensive (as I have been warned by Briv before), someone to delete the occassional spam that pops up. What we don't need is an obnoxious parent-like figure breathing down our necks, however well-intentioned he may be.

I agree that we should be peer-moderated, but I like the idea of doing it in a dedicated thread.
Look at Economics of Building in Boston thread. A good thread until it started to get sidetracked by people taking pot shots at you.
I'd like to tell them that you are a nineteen year old (?) college student who is still living with his parents, thus the situation you describe isn't all that unusual (peer-moderated) but I really don't want to clutter up that thread and drag it further off-topic. It would be better to move them here and discuss it in this thread.
Just my 2cents.

See this is what I don't understand about this forum. Everytime someone in college or someone who lives with their parents, etc. makes a comment or insults someone for their views--people come out and say "You don't know anything, you live with your parents" or "You're just a college kid, what do you know about [insert subject here]"

I know plenty of people in their 40's and 50's that have _ZERO_ clue about development and how it works. I grant you that as someone in college, I have zero experience owning my own property or managing developments. However, why does this nullify my opinion? Why does it make it less valid when expressing something about a large building on a particular parcel of land, or something that 99% of this forum has ZERO hands on experience with?

I'm not picking at you Statler but at the majority of this board who thinks that because they are now in their 30's and finished with college, that they are superior and thus their ideas and opinions much greater than those who are still in school.

Dude is a pain in the ass sometimes, he's someone who stirs the pot, etc. That's fine, but just because he's 17/18 (whatever) doesn't make his opinions less valid than someone who's 35 and hasn't even gone to college. Sometimes he goes about things in the wrong way, but most of the time he makes valid points. They shouldn't be discredited because of his age.

The reason I brought up the fact that Dude was in college and living with his parents was that the other posters thought he was bragging about his wealth. I was just pointing out since he was living with his folks, the situation he described was pretty normal. I was only explaining the context of his post for the two new posters. No harm meant.

I didn't necessarily direct my post to you Statler, infact it wasn't meant for you at all. It just reminded me of what I posted and I figured I'd get it off my chest.

I'm sorry if you felt I meant it towards you, It wasn't.

I agree and disagree, BSG. Clearly, someone in high school like dude, who is more educated than the average H.S. kid, is qualified to discuss matters like urban development with someone who is older and may not have attended college or may have graduated with undistinguished marks. I guess even with someone who has a Ph.D. There shouldn't be a minimum age required to take someone seriously. TGSwimfly is younger than dude and always makes good points. But, there is a line that can be crossed when someone speaks with unqualified authority on a subject that someone else may know more about given both education and experience. And no, I don't mean myself compared to dude. And Statler, I understand where you were coming from. You were using a for instance to describe what a peer moderated situation would have read like. Correcto?

^^ Pretty much yeah,

..and to be fair I have picked on Dude for his age before, but only in response to something where I thought his age really colored his post. To be honest, I think Dude is an incredibly smart kid. I don't doubt he'll be successful at whatever he choses to do.

Assuming at least average intelligence, success stems most directly from personableness.

I think Dude is way more outspoken than he is smart.

I've seen him display a firm grasp on some pretty complex economic issues. Not to keep coming back to his age but there are a lot of adults that don't understand this stuff as well as he does. Granted, his rhetoric style lacks a bit of maturity, but I think the underlying intelligence comes through on occasion.

It's the "Hey let's psycho-analyze the Dude" thread! :)

this is really grinding my gears....

the emporis website. when is the last time that was updated? seriously. And the picture of the boston skyline is fucking terrible, i know this was addressed by somebody a while back, i think it was in the winthrop square thread, but it still hasnt been changed. wasnt there someone on this website who was supposedly an editor for emporis? they need to update their shit.

^ Poolio and castevens. both currently on the missing persons list.

Man I can't remember the last time poolio has posted here.. castevens I know was busy with being an RA at Northeastern and such, but I know nothing of poolio. Too bad, 'cause I have tons of photos of mine I'd love to see up on Empris.

Currently Grinding my Gears: The NBA Lottery. The FUCKING 5th PICK! You gotta be kidding me. Tommy Heinsohn should have pulled a nutty and started throwing punches. I'm legitimately pissed right now.

Thank You.

Thank You.

This is not at all grinding my gears. I'm deeply, deeply, saddened. I'm in a state of shock and disillusionment. Depression is setting in. What happened to the luck of the irish? so sad. so sad.

to see a franchise fall this far for this long is quite depressing. I think I may cry in the bathroom for an hour or two.
