Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Sorry if it's been discussed before, but I continue to be baffled that this big set of ramps was considered the better/more economical option than raising two commuter rail tracks on a bridge over the various GLX tracks and switches. I mean I'm sure it'll give a great view of the city and...

    New ads?

Didn't realize Firefox on Android had add-ons, I thought I just had to accept mobile browsing as terrible everywhere - thanks! I think It's been said already, but my first thought when visiting was the site was hit with an ad injection attack (I used to manage hosting and had to deal with that...

MGM Music Hall (née Fenway Theater) | 12 Lansdowne St | Fenway

I don't disagree, but I also wouldn't consider a theater's interior to be very important architecturally. You want to draw attention to the stage, not the area around it. And most music events are going to light everything but the stage to be too dark to see anyway.

    Cambridge Crossing (NorthPoint) | East Cambridge/Charlestown | Cambridge/Boston

BigPicture - not sure if you've seen the render from the developer's website but it gives a decent idea of what the old station will look like once redeveloped. Of course the building in that site looks small and bland but that might just be a placeholder here.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Can someone ELI5 what this actually means for the projects? On a scale of "toothless resolution" to "GLX-style legal mandate" how much does this mean those projects are definitely going to happen? If it's leaning towards the latter that's actually pretty incredible, especially under the current...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Answered your own question right there! Less cynically, I'm guessing the city of Somerville did a great deal of lobbying to make it happen. My understanding is they've been pushing hard to redevelop Union Square to increase their commercial office space, and without a visible transit link it'd...

    General Infrastructure

I've seen laser-based height detection and appropriate signs responding work decently well, probably not 100% reliably but at least it provides more direct feedback then another static sign among many. If my small old hometown in Connecticut could do it I'd have to imagine Boston could make it...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I feel like the way it's phrased makes it sound longer than it is; if it's only two weekends wouldn't it be easier to just list the dates? Any other year I imagine the downtown businesses would be pretty upset at the timing, during the busiest point of the shopping season. Probably isn't at...

The old Traveler's Building (photos, information, etc)

I'm amazed the demolition choice was implosion. Surrounded closely by other buildings and the central artery from the looks of it, sounds really dangerous to me. Never heard of this building until today, I love learning tiny bits of the city's history here.

Charlie Card Store to reopen on November 3rd.

Wow, thanks for the thorough answers everyone! Glad it exists, even though I've never needed it (although like F-Line said, it definitely sounds like it'd be better to have a bunch of smaller decentralized offices).

Charlie Card Store to reopen on November 3rd.

Asking the potentially dumb question - what exactly is the purpose of the CharlieCard store? Is it just a place where you can get a card once, like convenience stores near stations? Also, from that photo it seems awfully overbuilt, or maybe a lot more people use it than I realize (I've clearly...

    MBTA Construction Projects

What still happening at Park St? They did the general cleaning and new signs/lights a while back, are they doing more extensive work?

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Wondering if the hypothetical Porter Square renders from Alex Hogrefe/@visualizing_architecture have ever been discussed here. I'm not sure how I feel about them (more views here and here) but it feels like a crazy pitch by Boston station standards. I don't think the large structure makes sense...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

The T posted about the Green Line Train Protection System on Instagram a few days ago. It's the first time I'm hearing about it - anyone know if it's block signaling like the other lines have, or something more like CBTC? I wouldn't even dare to dream of it being something like automation for...

MXD Residential Tower | 121 Broadway | Kendall Square

I've started getting Courbanize ads for this project (tangent, what exactly are those meant to accomplish anyway?) and it got me wondering - has it been specified what quantity of parking is going to remain after this project is done? I'd love the answer to be zero but given Kendall's transit...
