Thanks Stlin, great write up and I really enjoyed it. I wonder if 35-40' city bus chassis would be feasible to convert. Or if they are more maneuverable than the equivalent length Boston truck you mentioned. I suspect the rear engine would be problematic?

I'm confident the rationale is two part: 1- The public always asks to reduce the height/visual massing. This is so ubiquitous that it's codified in zoning (setbacks) and design guidelines (change up materials to break up street wall). Architects and developers respond by including the different...

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

Looks like the new delta lounge is open today. Pics of the lounge only, but I assume this means the gate area is open, as well. https://thepointsguy.com/news/delta-boston-skyclub-international-terminal-e/

Not making fun of you at all! I wholly agree that the structure matters and I think Plen-T-Pak was poking fun at the poor quality of most wood-framed 5 over 1s, equating them to papier-mache.

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

Thanks for the detailed response. I don't intend to argue the various lane count alternatives because the planners have hopefully considered them all seriously (even though I disagree with them). However, it's clear they proposed the most auto-centric, overbuilt solution that lacks any relevance...

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

I understand the stated value of the additional lanes, but it seems like the feds have taken issue with the project (twice now?). Some combination of high cost and auto-centric planning seem like culprits (unless it's simply the feds not wanting to drop so much money on one project in this round...

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

Do the feds ever post explanations for rejecting seemingly worthy projects? I'd like to see the Corp come back with 4 lane bridges (instead of 6) paired with state commitments to increase rail service to address capacity rather than the additional lanes. That is definitely more aligned with...

City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

This looks like a huge improvement from the photos- way more landscaping, seating, and programmed space. The curvilinear ramp from congress to cambridge/tremont will make it feel much more organized and occupied than the wasteland it was before. I'm thankful the Government Center headhouse...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The guardrail seems actively counter productive. It provides a mid-level step allowing people to then reach over the top of the chain link fencing. The 8'H fencing effectively becomes 4'. Seems like the T is less worried about people climbing/throwing things over the fence than they are...

New Red and Orange Line Cars

This is awful. I witnessed a similar event happen first hand at Park St on the red line ~20 years ago (I was a child at the time). Person's foot and winter boot got stuck inside the train (door closed around ankle). Train started moving and the person hopped along outside while a car full of...

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

I love the colorful analogy, though unlike Brady's career, the best is yet to come for the SS bus terminal. To me, "nicest" as used in your original post connoted qualitative characteristics beyond raw functionality. I assumed you were also drawing a distinction between functionality and form.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

I'm curious- what aspects will make the new SS bus terminal nicer than the transbay terminal? I was discounting the functionality/connectivity of both. I think the SS bus terminal looks good based on the posted images, but materials, natural + artificial lighting, signage/wayfinding...

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Yeah, there are many downsides of Transbay to balance out the appearance. Least of all seems to be that some buses (excluding MUNI) still don't use the bus deck, electing to drop off and pick up connecting passengers curbside. Really disappointing.
