NYC Architecture and Development

A quarter century after the terror attacks of September 11 left a gaping void in Lower Manhattan, American Express broke ground Thursday on its new headquarters, a tiered glass and steel tower at 2 World Trade Center.
The 55-story building with more than an acre of outdoor terraces and gardens is the last commercial development in the footprint of the fallen twin towers of the World Trade Center.
"This has been a long journey," said Lisa Silverstein of Silverstein Properties, the developer of the site since 2001. "This is the capstone for the World Trade Center."
The skyscraper is scheduled to be complete in 2031 and rise 1,226 feet. It will be 550 feet shorter than 1 World Trade Center -- directly to the west. It will have two million square feet of office space and will be occupied entirely by the American Express Company, as its new world headquarters.

Unfortunate that theyre going with this most recent iteration, its definitely the worst version so far. They do a bad job at the stack of books thing, it doesnt go well with the site, it could be from anywhere, and just in general its an ugly building regardless of everything else around it.

The wtc complex could have been so much better if they had just kept a couple important parts like 1wtc spire radome, 3 wtc’s 4 spires… even better the larger cross bracing, and went with 2wtc’s 4 diamond roof design.

For it to take thissssss long to get this far only to get such a watered down end result for the complex sucks.

I've never been a fan of 3 WTC; I feel like it doesn't mesh well with the rest of the redevelopment. 2 WTC's design is also very disappointing, and I wish they had stuck with the 2006 design by Norman Foster.

Its because its missing pieces of the design that were VE’d out. This version of 3wtc was much better

What should have (and could have) been.

Silverstein cheaping out last second and cancelling the spire radome might be the worst part of all. Made the spire look like complete shit on the centerpiece tower. What a cluster.
