Augusta,Infill and Small Developments | Maine

For me it isn't just about weighing historical significance, but if the existing architecture is likely better than the replacement why not try and keep it? If the AMHI buildings were razed we all know what the replacements would look like. I feel the same about Free St, especially knowing what the replacement building will roughly look like.

I'm not of the Portland mindset that everything should be preserved. Old Chamber of Commerce on Free St? Raze it, I didn't blink.

But - Maine (and the US in general) made some pretty stupid decisions in the past. Once it's gone, we can't get it back.

And as a teacher of environmental ethics - I'll aways (ironically) be pro building UP than the constant expansion and waste. I'm sure you'll find that amusing too.

This 100%. Trust me, here in Texas (Austin) it is far worse. So much of the past has been wiped out and replaced with tacky value engineered crap. I wonder why developers don't just build heavy duty circus tents at this point.

I'm a big believer in restoration of older and noteworthy buildings, but not this one. It's too sprawling and highly energy inefficient. I can find a dozen other reasons to not invest a dime in this other than to raze it. Mercy Hospital was a different scenario due to its vertical and more efficient nature. And there are no associated feel-goods with this structure. I could elaborate on the happenings inside of a mental institution but it would be far too depressing.

In high school my psychology class took a similar trip to the state hospital in Montana. Everyone should see the things we saw. It would remind them just how lucky they are. Think Bedlum.

Edit: They aren't closed yet! They announced four days ago that they'll be closing on the 18th.

This project is great for Augusta and I'm fine with the design of the building but I personally would have preferred it to be located in the lot to the left. It just looks like a structure more suited for downtown than lower Western Avenue and would have been an anchor for that end of Water Street in my opinion.

Just means something even better needs to go in that lot ;) Water St is going to be great once more things come online and the Olde Fed re-opens from Uncommon Hospitality.
 
The lot Portlander indicated is the former train station site (if Google placemarks are to be believed). Perhaps, it could be that again, if we were to actually extend service north of Brunswick (cue lots of irresolvable discussion of Back Road vs Lower Road).

Big time YES. I say all in favor should at least send a short note to the state reps in those areas expressing interest :cool: I know this has been a back and forth topic, but it really needs to happen in the near future.
