Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Dream to dream. It's way too early to speculate at all about what the outcome of yet another "infrastructure week" might be.

    COVID-19 in Boston

The MA Building Trades Council exec board, which represents over 75,000 construction industry workers, voted unanimously to support work stoppage on all “non-essential” construction projects in the state. I doubt their call will be heeded. This will continue to be a tricky issue. Delicate...

Federal Government's Response to the Coronavirus

Would have thought that would have been likely after all of the rounds of Quantitative Easing, but inflation barely budged. We'll see what happens this time.

Federal Government's Response to the Coronavirus

Interest rates on US debt continue to be in the basement. As long as the debt is dirt-cheap the US will continue to take advantage of it.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

In my opinion it should go in the project specific thread before a general thread.

    COVID-19 in Boston

Meanwhile, Pompeo is holding up a G7 resolution because no other country will call it the "Wuhan Virus". I'd say I'm surprised, but it's SOP for the US Government these days...

    COVID-19 in Boston

Statewide order says this wrt general construction being exempted from the stoppage order: "Construction Workers who support the construction, operation, inspection, and maintenance of construction sites and construction projects (including housing construction)" Which means that construction...

    COVID-19 in Boston

Nonessential projects in the City of Boston itself are halted per orders from Mayor Walsh. He's left the door open for that order to be amended going forward. State projects within the city are not halted.

    COVID-19 in Boston

Forgive me for interpreting this: “the country (the world) is rapidly going scorched-earth policy in what could be a well-intentioned but very misguided containment effort,” as suggesting that social distancing is the wrong tack. I think most people would interpret it that way.

    COVID-19 in Boston

Still waiting for any actual evidence countering decisions being made by states to maximize social distancing, Brad.

    COVID-19 in Boston

This Twitter thread from the Johns Hopkins’ director of the center for health security captures my thinking and why I really struggle with all the contrarians.

    COVID-19 in Boston

The answer is good public policy. In hindsight, we should have been much more prepared for this occurrence. We weren’t. We willfully weren’t. Going forward, public policy can mitigate some of the negative effects of a closed down economy for the mid-term. But we have a hard time with that too...

    COVID-19 in Boston

What I fail to understand is how not shutting things down would help the economy. There's an assumption that the economy would just keep humming right along absent the government intervention we're seeing. I don't buy it. How well would the economy operate if all the hospitals were overflowing...

    COVID-19 in Boston

Our health care systems don't have to capacity to handle the effects of *not* slowing down the economy. No one is trying to contain the virus anymore. This is about "flattening the curve" so that the infection rate is slow but steady, rather than sharp spikes.

HN Gorin Hotel Project | 39 Stanhope Street | Back Bay

Welcome, rff! Your opening post seems quite pointed. To be honest, I'm not seeing how JumboBuc's quoted post discredits architects or reveals a lack of maturity. Why are you charging in with a chip on your shoulder?

    ANNOUNCEMENT: COVID-19 and Development Projects

We all know that as of this posting Boston has a construction moratorium. We all wonder what the impact will be with regard to projects both ongoing, approved, and proposed. We all wonder about the impacts for financing, supply/demand, etc. Please stop putting this speculation in the threads for...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I'd argue that Ball Square station is damn close to the epicenter of the commercial district. I don't love "Magoun Square" for the GLX stop because it's not in Magoun Square and it will never feel like it's in Magoun Square. It's on the periphery of the residential neighborhood that is centered...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I still think "Somerville Junction" is a better name for the Lowell Street station than "Magoun Square".

COVID-19 Impacts on Logan, MBTA, and Boston travel and tourism

The state hasn't halted construction, so any state project (MBTA, Massport, etc.) can continue.
