I think some of the others here are nicer, but I dunno, this picture made me smile whenever I saw it. Something about the lush green against the sky blue glass. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47097218254_20a88fc465_h.jpg

The BCEC expansion which nets little additional venue space in Boston by destroying the Hynes without replacement.

The D/EMU Indigo Line, replacing the Farmount line. The D/EMU line that would replace the Grand Junction Railroad.

    Hall of Shame Nominees

Zinc, a landscraper which completely blocked off third street from Cambridge Crossing and didn't even get proper approval for their signature purple lights, thus leaving it a dull mishmash of blocks.

Harvard SEC (Science & Engineering Complex) | Western Ave | Allston

I think these things can be hard to predict. Building 76 at MIT has been an ice falling hazard for forever, and now they've completely blocked off the picnic tables in winter because of it. But if you look at it, you'd never think it. Meanwhile some more geometrically intense buildings like...

Out of curiosity, do we have any numbers on how much that senior living renovation cost?

MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

Isn't a lottery where a few students benefit better than a system where all grad students have really rough rents? I agree increasing stipends would also be good. They can increase every stipend by $1,000 at only 2-3% of MIT's operating budget.

CS students make around 3200 take home per month.

MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

MIT has only offered 10-15% discounts to students afaik right now, on a temporary 1 year basis. They have made no other offers to increase this place's affordability. If they have a plan they should come out with it.

MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

I think people would have been satisfied if they built that graduate student housing elsewhere on campus at the same time as the KSI, if they knew the rents would be priced like this. The thing is high rents here don't even make sense. It's not like MIT had to acquire this land. It's not like...

MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

Right, and it's not like this is open to the public, it is ONLY open to students making $3,200 at best. This is only going to be affordable to people with partners earning a decent income or students with rich daddies.

Constellation Center | 43 Thorndike St | East Cambridge

"The company has committed to community and arts uses by providing space for the CultureHouse activity popup; hosting dance in unexpected spaces; bringing in muralists; and hosting quirkily curated small-vendor markets." That is NOT arts programming. That's half-assed bullshit.

MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

Counterpoint: Nobody asked MIT to build graduate student housing in the heart of Kendall Square. Also, many graduate students are international students with rules stating that their spouses cannot work in the U.S., thus making it outright unaffordable. MIT is not-for-profit with a 17 billion...

MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

So here is something kind of appalling. The Eastgate Graduate Student Housing rent prices were around $1,600 per month. They're raising rents in the new graduate student housing building to $2,600 per month (and tearing down Eastgate). I do NOT think this is what Cambridge expected or wanted...

Top of the building is much, much better. A lot less crazy going on. Would be better if this thing had a better color scheme throughout of course.

    BCEC expansion | Seaport

Interesting. I was told the reason Atlantic City has not expanded is because they could not convince the sparse homeowners still occupying that land to sell their land at a reasonable rate.
