    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

I've updated my map of MBTA bus lanes: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1zDqhF81be7sCPQVNEBxBJrCp0vRl8i_J&usp=sharing Any corrections welcome! I'm not currently living in Boston, so I'm not always sure exactly what's on the ground and when it was put there.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

Somewhere, my 11th grade English teacher is crying.

If you're building with two platforms to avoid trains switching tracks, it would also give access to the Adams Woods trail network. I feel like the value proposition would be pretty good. Just as long as passengers don't imitate Walden and walk down the tracks into Concord.

    Waltham Transit & Connectivity

Waltham did have a streetcar network operated by the Middlesex and Boston Street Railway: Like most small city networks, it didn't last long; it was entirely replaced by buses by 1930. The M&B continued operating local bus service until 1972, when the MBTA took over the remaining lines. The...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Whoops, you're correct. I forgot about Brookline Hills, and Amory Street and Babcock Street on the B. Same commentary applies to all three of those.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Everything with this round of stations (GLX, the 14 B and C stops, the 5 D stops, and the planned E stops) is all provisioned for easy conversion for higher platforms for Type 10s. The current order of Type 10 cars only provides for single-car trains (113' long) which can be done fairly cheaply...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Dean Road and Beaconsfield are not exact substitutes any more than Cleveland Circle and Reservoir are. They're 1,000 feet (4 minutes) of walking apart, and (as Teban notes) Beaconsfield does not serve trips to destinations along Beacon Street. Ayr Road to Washington Street is ~3,700 feet; an...

I agree that axing South Street is a bit odd. Even with CHA flipped to the west side of the intersection, it's still a 900 foot walk from South Street at the closest point. This project doesn't seem to be touching the Warren/Allston/Griggs trio. I'm not sure if it's because they weren't touched...

Chestnut Hill Avenue/South Street and Fairbanks/Brandon Hall are to be consolidated, and Kent Street closed, as part of the station modifications. That will result in stop spacing averaging 1,200 feet on the C and 1,450 feet on the B. (The B will go up to 1,600 in the likely future scenario that...

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

I'll quote myself from a different thread a few weeks ago: Yes, fare evasion with all-door boarding is possible, but it's not actually the massive issue that Pioneer et al make it out to be. Systems that have converted haven't seen a massive increase in fare evasion - it turns out that most...

The "15" symbol means every 15 or less, not exactly 15 minute headways. I believe the "T" routes (now without the T designation) are largely planned to be 8-11 minute headways depending on time of day.

I fully agree. Weekend service is extremely important, both for all the benefits it provides and to attract riders to weekday service. It should be minimum hourly service on every line. Stoughton doesn't even have any weekend service! It's wild to me that even the current two-hour weekend...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Fairmount Line ridership quadrupled from 2012 to 2022. By late 2022, it was at 107% of 2018 ridership - 25% ahead of the next-best line. That's entirely attributable to service quality. In 2012, there were 75 weekly round trips: 15 weekday round trips with 2-hour midday gaps, and no weekend...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

On another forum, someone complained that East Taunton station doesn't have any pedestrian access from the southwest side of the tracks, and likened it to Anderson/Woburn. While I do agree that the lack of access is unfortunate for the few people who live off Plain Street, it's amazing just how...

    Underground station layouts

Unfortunately, it's not possible, as we've discussed before. There's only about 2 feet between the surface of Congress Street (ex-Washington Street) and the top of the Green Line tunnel. If you want a southern entrance to the Green Line, you either go under the tracks or put a new headhouse on...

All weekend Franklin trains will now run via Fairmount, with timed transfers with Providence trains at Readville. Transfers are timed for 7 minutes inbound and 9-16 minutes outbound. On weekdays, 6 IB and 4 OB also run over the Fairmount Line; all but 1 in each direction have timed transfers at...

    Green Line Reconfiguration

All-door boarding at surface stops with proof of payment (POP) is standard on basically every light rail system except the Green Line. Yes, fare evasion is possible, but it's not actually the massive issue that Pioneer et al make it out to be. Systems that have converted haven't seen a massive...

    Biking in Boston

Type 10 platforms will be 14" above top of rail, which is likely incompatible with buses. The likely solution is to have a lower platform for buses just before or after the Green Line platform. This does present a potential bunching issue where the bus and train are in the wrong order, and one...
