    Elevated Rail: Boston and Beyond

I would love that route for an elevated GL branch to Everett or LRV urban ring to Chelsea. It would serve the Revs stadium and that whole area east of Alford St really well.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Looks like a light rail project. Oh well, baby steps. Set it up for BRT with eventual conversion to light rail directly feeding off the Mattapan LRV line.

Shreve, Crump & Low Redevelopment | 334-364 Boylston Street | Back Bay

Dang! I like that one. Great old industrial look and a bit art deco. I wish the Shreve, Crump and Low was up to this (photo by DZH22):

Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part XVIII (2024)

Center Plaza looks good in that particular photo because it's surrounded by buildings. Half the problem with the GC buildings in general is that they sit stark and isolated amidst empty plazas. If they were on normal built-up city blocks, they would fare a lot better.

    35 McGrath Highway | Somerville

Ugh! Lipstick on a pig as they say. I wish an urban type housing development, including a continuation of the East Cambridge street grid, would go in here instead of this ticky-tack suburbia. A lot of shopping centers nationally are drying up because of the rise of online shopping. I wish...

Back to the future. It's similar to the original layout of Blue Hill Ave with the trolley reservation down the middle a century ago.

A Street Map of Boston circa 1946

Thank you! It's a good map that does take some liberties with scale and correct location of the bridges and roads west of the BU Bridge, but still very cool nonetheless.

I used to go to Boy Scout meetings in the building it replaced when I was a kid. The new buildings are great.

Transit Planning $h!tposting (Ideas so bad, they're good)

BERY's 1945 transit expansion plan showed a stub end of an RL extension aimed straight at Waltham (see below). The RL would have terminated in east Watertown with a Mattapan style light rail line from the RL terminus to Arlington Hts. The interseting part is that the RL appears to be set up...

Shreve, Crump & Low Redevelopment | 334-364 Boylston Street | Back Bay

Totally agree about the street level activation.. That's a given for any building on a bustling urban site. The style of the building is what I was focusing on, a more masonry type structure instead of the all glass cube punctuated by plain white frames. If the JFK was done in masonry...

Harvard Square Infill and Small Developments

Ha ha. I used to take the escalator up every morning in that old kiosk on my way to high school back in the 1960s. It was great.

Shreve, Crump & Low Redevelopment | 334-364 Boylston Street | Back Bay

Agree. I think the low-rise part of the Fed Building would have fit into the context of the Shreve Crump & Low site much better than the glass box they ended up with.

One lane each direction seems too small to me for this major arterial.

Shreve, Crump & Low Redevelopment | 334-364 Boylston Street | Back Bay

It actually reminds me of the low-rise portion of the Federal Building in GC.
