General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Much has been made about the MBTA's comms failures in the RLT/GLT/OLT thread. Here is another one (not related to any of those three lines so I'm posting here). Blue Line diversion during evenings next week, Mon-Thu, from Bowdoin to Orient Heights. That starts in four days and was just...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

There has been some progress made in recent days, mainly in the northbound direction, though there is still plenty of work to do. Tufts to Chinatown northbound was resolved yesterday morning: Wellington to Malden Center northbound was resolved on Friday of last week: Our favorite segment...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

I'm not going to copy and paste the whole article here, but basically they are now claiming that they discovered they needed to do more work north of North Station to lift slow zones; Back Bay to Tufts is still slow because they need to replace 200 more Cologne eggs to return to full speed...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

I seriously hope someone makes a FOIA request on their communications related to the shutdown and the persistent slow zones. Might be the only way the real truth comes out, much like with the Blue Line tunnel closure fiasco. In related news, North Station to Assembly northbound is finally back...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

The MBTA is now claiming (via a statement to WBZ) that they decided to to some last minute work between Assembly and North Station that was above and beyond what was planned. I have my doubts about that explanation, to put it kindly. For sure, it's good that they were be able to do extra...

New Red and Orange Line Cars

Yeah, the COVID and trade war stuff is obviously well outside the control of CRRC. We have no way of knowing for sure how things would have gone if neither happened. All we can do is speculate, which only does us so good. I try to cut CRRC themselves some slack - even though there may well be...

New Red and Orange Line Cars

Yeah I think the new factory is the big issue here. The Buy Massachusetts stipulation, if you will, set the MBTA up for this as CRRC had no factory in North America despite their international experience. Of course, CRRC has to start somewhere in North America and I can't really blame them for...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

The issue is not with the fact that there is a speed restriction due to tie replacement. In a vacuum, that's fine. The issue is with the fact that they still have a lot of tie replacement left, necessitating the slow zones, 2 weeks after a 4 week shutdown that they explicitly stated would fix...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Something like that; I don't remember the precise number. What makes me angry is the way they have just been lying through their teeth about all this. The fact that the work was incomplete shouldn't be something that comes out in a BSRA meeting. Obviously the shutdown was never supposed to be a...

New Red and Orange Line Cars

Point of note from tonight's BSRA meeting: there have been no new Orange Line 1400-series deliveries from CRRC since June; they will need to exceed their goal of 4 cars/month and get to 8 cars/month delivered to meet the goal of completing deliveries by next summer. That seems.... questionable...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

In the BSRA meeting tonight they said that there is still tie and track work north of North Station left (Sullivan-Community College was cited specifically but Assembly-Sullivan and CC-North Station are still very slow too) that is being completed overnight. So yeah, the MBTA is lying to the...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

If this is the case, they should be upfront and honest with the public about it. Unfortunately, as everyone here knows, being upfront and honest with the public is not the MBTA's strong suit, to put it nicely. Presumably very few members of the public watch the BoD meetings. Important info that...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Thank you for this! I wanted to do a deeper analysis than what I gave yesterday - just like this - but work got in the way yesterday and today. It's good to see at least some progress on some of the slow zones but it's clear they still have some work left. I'm off work tomorrow and might make a...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

FWIW, slow-as-molasses Orange is still considerably faster than shuttled Orange. End-to-end, it takes in the vicinity of 50 minutes to traverse the line right now compared to somewhere in the ballpark of 100-120 minutes via the shuttles, depending on traffic. 50 minutes was also about what it...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Oh, absolutely. The Red Line slow zones looked completely ridiculous on their Slow Zone tracker, until the Orange Line reopened and made the Red Line look fast on the chart by comparison.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

I'm beginning to suspect that some of the work may have been botched. The MBTA told WGBH's Jeremy Siegel last night that they had eliminated all slow zones except between Assembly and North Station. There are still a handful of slow zones outside of that area, including Tufts to Back Bay...
