    Crazy Transit Pitches

Some candidates that come to mind: Logan Airport, connecting the airport terminals, Airport Station (Blue Line), and the rental car center. Between North and South Station, either over: some combo of Purchase St, Cross St, Atlantic Ave, and Surface Rd, ideally steering clear of the actual...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Sad, but hopefully this is an indication that future bus infrastructure projects will be more than paint as city officials wake up to the reality that paint and no enforcement does absolutely nothing.

I agree on Quincy Center. For Roslindale, I think it makes more sense to run more late service on the Needham Line.

    Biking in Boston

I agree, but this is a big step in the right direction. The section you highlighted does not appear to be part of the project, and rather shows the existing layout. I think it would be highly preferable if the full two-way bikeway continued along Dartmouth to Stuart, but it is currently only...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Exactly, which is why I specified “Tx” rather than 15 minute corridors. I don’t see a need for the 35/36, 220/222, or 442/445 to be in Phase 1. Let’s not let perfect be the enemy of good.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

If we’re implementing later night service than exists today, Red Line service is more than adequate for Quincy for Phase 1. Red, Orange, Blue, Green, Silver, and the “Tx” routes of the BNRD should be more than adequate to start.

This seems like a very solvable problem. In fact, I bet Eng already has a solution.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

If I’m understanding this correctly, this proposal is essentially to extend the Orange Line in both directions with three branches in each direction, with each branch receiving up to 3-4 tph?

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

What about frequency? The Orange Line currently runs 10 tph regularly and has about the same ridership as the entire Commuter Rail system. Wouldn’t it be infeasible to retain that level of frequency under such a proposal, amounting to a major transit loss for a very high ridership corridor?

    Biking in Boston

I’m hugely in favor of adding bike infrastructure here (on Elm between Russell and Somerville Ave), but this project does not cover the stretch of Elm between Dover and Russell. So, to be clear, this will not fully “patch” the last section without bike infrastructure between Union and Davis, but...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Couldn’t they have boarded the Red Line or heck even walked through the Winter Street Concourse and boarded the Orange Line?

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

This will be good for travel between West Cambridge and Watertown north of the River and Newton and Brighton south of the River. What would be really great though would be: A busway on Mt Auburn between Fresh Pond Parkway and Watertown Square. Center-running bus lanes Galen Street from...

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

There are many reasons why I (and others) don’t ride intercity buses places, but do ride trains to comparable locations. Speaking for myself only, but as a single anecdote that exists in a sea of many many many people (as evidenced by the data), one of those reasons is the ability to bring a...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I agree. I volunteered heavily for that effort in 2020 before COVID shut things down. Given that failed, I’ll ask my question again: what can we collectively do to ensure that the next GM of the MBTA is of the Eng mold and not the Poftak mold? If the sub-answer is “implement Ranked Choice...

Are there paths forward that include systemic change so that we move away from Gangs of New York style “democracy?”

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Columbus Ave is scheduled to begin construction in 2025. Blue Hill Ave is scheduled to begin construction in 2026. Any other bus infrastructure projects are smaller and/or not as far along. Columbia Rd, for example, is still in its fledgling proposal stages.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

At this point, there’s likely a general consensus among transit-followers that Phillip Eng has dramatically improved the MBTA’s transparency, planning, maintenance, and management practices. There is a stark difference between the Poftak administration and the Eng administration and its honestly...

Downtown Crossing <-> Kendall/MIT Yesterday (8/27), Downtown Crossing -> Kendall had a median travel time of 4 minutes, 45 seconds, which was the fastest since July 3, 2023: Yesterday (8/27), Kendall -> Downtown Crossing had a median travel time of 5 minutes, 14 seconds, which was the...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

According to TransitMatters' Data Dashboard: Yesterday, there were 23 minutes, 41 seconds of slow zones on the Red Line. This was the lowest amount of slow zone time since June 2: On the weekend of June 1-2, Shuttle Buses replaced service between Alewife and Harvard for track work. The last...
