I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

Is there a reason to believe that cutting lanes in the throat would reduce cost in any remotely significant way? I see basically no reason to think that would be the case. The bike path whether on boardwalk or not is cheap (in relative terms), and so is a lane-mile of at-grade asphalt. The...

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

600V is fine enough, I agree. "Low-voltage" as a commonly used term in the US in my experience, is usually referring to <50V, which usually has much less in terms of regulations in terms of how + where you can run it. (ex: The guy pulling network cables typically doesn't need to be a licensed...

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

I like in-route charging and think it has merit, but uh - you're not going to charge a bus in any useful way from "low-voltage" wires unless they're very thick, very heavy, and very expensive. Volts x Amps = Watts is not really a negotiable formula.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

The national average of projects in comparable settings or not? The "average" piece of railroad track for the nation is likely in a rural area with zero challenges for access, working space, quality of life concerns for abutters, wetlands, etc. It'll also likely see a lower volume of usage, and...

Idea for fixing the housing shortage

This isn't necessarily disagreement, but adding for some discussion: - 2017 is relatively recent, takes a while to get plans/projects started, especially in places not that "hot" of a market. I'm not sure I'd expect to see that huge of a "bonus" gain from the removal of the parking minimum yet...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Someone who knows more than me can try to find newer ridership numbers, but as of the 2014 Bluebook: South Street has the worst ridership on the B Line by far, with only 214 riders per day. The next worst was Chiswick Rd at 615, and then Chestnut Hill Ave at 626. South Street's ridership...

    MBTA Construction Projects

If Street View is to be believed and I understand the spot you're referring to, it appears that there was simply no curbing along Penn/Columbia St or Taber St in the vicinity of this in the past, rather than any sort of actual "curb cut" that would have been documented. Sidewalks were just...

    Biking in Boston

On a somewhat related note: Why is this? I travel around quite a bit and the % of lights that have some kind of intelligent detection + reaction to conditions seems to be far higher basically everywhere else (including other "old" US metro areas) than around here. Something MA has been...

    Biking in Boston

Poorer people who've been priced out to and now have to commute long distances by car from the exurbs or furthest satellite cities to be able to work their in-person job in the city that is directly providing services to the urban-dwelling residents of Boston, is, if true.....making a pretty...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

In speed - sure. In capacity - even a slow train is a lot better. Pure anecdote since I don't even know where to start looking for that data, but even if overall daily volume isn't much lower in July, IMO it's more tourist/leisure spread out over the day + less rush-hour peak commuters.

    Biking in Boston

AFAIK they're keeping the double left turn lane at the north end, and leaving a generous amount of 4-lane each way at the south end before it tapers to 2, so I expect the practical throughput won't really change at all. There's a lot of road diets I'm not all that thrilled about, but this one...

Downtown/Financial district infill and small developments

Can just be that the economics on the hotel are that positive. Boston seems to be frequently ranked as the most expensive city in the country for hotel prices in recent years.

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

It provides benefit to passengers. No one likes disconnected terminals, and it limits the amenities passengers can access. Terminal A in particular has pretty mediocre amenities. No lounges and the fewest food/beverage options. Getting access to B is a pretty good improvement for someone with a...

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

Crappy hack, but can't you just access the bridge from Babcock anyway via Ashford/Gardner for services that link to the east/south east? ----------- General 64/66/Allston-Brighton commentary to this + some other posts: - The 2 block stretch of Harvard Ave from Comm-Brighton Ave is extremely...

    General Infrastructure

There's other studies/proposals out there for the circular disaster to the west, the drawings for this seem to pretty clearly indicate that they're keeping the scope of this project out of the intersection. I do agree that building that path if the intersection work isn't coming at the same...

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

Are we actually planning to keep every lane open on both roads during all/nearly all phases of construction? I'd agree that seems excessive and very expensive, but it also doesn't seem particularly consistent with what we've been doing with roadwork in the region of late. If this is both the...

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

The "throat area" is likely not of particularly large expense itself. It's basically just asphalt at-grade, where there's already a road or flat area, at-grade. Adding or removing lanes here is not going to shift the cost of the project substantially that I can see. I am not sure what the cost...

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

They're from Analogic (based in Peabody), and they're going into airports all over the country as standard equipment. I've seen them in BDL starting a year or two ago. I'm not sure it's even Logan's choice what type of equipment to use there, since it seems they're purchased directly by the...

Roads and Highways General Development Thread

I'm also rather puzzled how this manages to cost $100m. Is that really the cost for a single new highway bridge and a mile or two of paving at this point? Seems hard to have a less complicated place for a totally new interchange installation in terms of the state already owning nearly all the...

    Post-Covid Travel Patterns and Solutions

As someone who's not that old: I know plenty of friends that have moved out to the burbs/satellite cities but didn't want to do so, they just couldn't really afford to live in the city anymore. If their rent was the same as a few years ago as a % of their income, they'd likely still be here...
