    Biking in Boston

New Flex post protected lanes have popped up in Harvard Square. Maybe next time we do the lightspeed bike lane implementation before the cyclist dies.

A root cause of the bunching that occurs could be the speed restriction on the outbound side of the Cedar Grove Cemetery viaduct. That little imbalance in travel time between in and outbound can cause cars to stack right up. Also, some kind of push-button signal (like they have on the...

How in the hell do Mattapan-Ashmont headways manage to be as inconsistent as they are? Is it a result of the PCC shortage?

    Crazy Transit Pitches

What if we build a tunnel on the Congress St. alignment of NSRL, and then hook it up to the Braintree branch of the red line?

We have those people, except nobody has any money anymore.

Also: unfortunately, the old elevated bents near Lechemere appear to no longer be "in-situ", which is disappointing.

Rode by Gilman and Magoun Squares today. Also, in grand Boston tradition, there will probably be streetcar rails embedded in the ground here for some time. It's genuinely creepy how ancient these tracks already look.

No, but I can confirm that Sean Garbally, in addition to being an all-around good guy and very pro-transit, has great constituent services. He might be able to put you in touch with Rep. Donato.

    Yes, I believe so.

Just got off the phone with GLX constructors - they say that the two steel elevated support columns still standing just south of Lechemere are going to stay there permanently as a reminder of the old elevated structure.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Okay, BLX-Lynn on the Point-of-Pines alignment...but instead of building a new bridge across the western channel we beef up the supports of the North Shore Road bridge...and run an elevated over it. Blue would run at-grade until just after Point-of-Pines luxury rentals. Then, it would climb up...

Did the "Green Line Type Nine doors take way too long to close" thing turn out to be a nothingburger?

I don't think that Transitmatters is wrong when the say that turning Pan Am into a sort of "New England Network Rail" is a good idea. They are wrong that it's a necessary step to creating good passenger service (as F-line and others have pointed out), but an open-access railway has a good chance...

If they remain in place, they won't be load bearing. It does look like they're going to stay put as decoration; they truly are the last steel elevated bents in Boston now that the Northern Avenue Bridge has come down.

Maybe it's the transit equivalent of a trap street? Add a deliberate error to your map so if your rivals coppy it you notice?

You can't see it in that picture, but there are about ten of them, regularly spaced, running from just before the Cross St. bridge to the point where the commuter rail tracks bend away to the left. The placement suggests pylon foundations.

I follow Gary Keenor (@25Kv) on Twitter and he uses the term regularly; maybe it's a British thing?

Spotted near Cross Street and Mass Ave: What look to be piles of ties covered by plastic sheets and and poured concrete bases for OHLE pylons.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Dumb idea: Propose to electrify at least some of the commuter rail system using a 3rd rail. Naturally, the NIMBYS would be opposed, at which point a counter-proposal using an overhead catenary system that wouldn't fry their little Fifi with 700 or so volts could be laid out.

Freight and General New England RR News

Dumb idea: Could (if given enough money) NNEPRA buy Pan Am (I guess turning into NNERA)? This really is a crazy transit pitch, but this really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
