Boston done in Sim City 4!

It's unlikely that CS 2 is coming out in the next year or so given that the Airport DLC is coming out tomorrow. People thought that the sequel was in the works because it's been more than a year since the previous DLC came out (Sunset Harbor) and then lo an behold, they announced the Airport DLC...

Boston done in Sim City 4!

Thanks for that. I needed it It's essentially the same thing as Simcity 4. It's going to generate the same building over and over again unless you download mods and assets. Once you have a few nice looking ones, you'll start to get some variety that would improve the realism of the city...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Just found out the new LA MetroRail cars are also being built by the CRRC at the Springfield, MA factory. Will be interesting to see if they encounter the same issues that the MBTA did on their cars. Will report. https://www.railwaypro.com/wp/chinese-metro-cars-for-la-unveiled/ Kind of sad...

How Tall Are Boston's Buildings and Should They Be Taller?

An argument that I made time and time again in this forum but that some seems to have trouble grasping or they see the housing market as a homogenous market (it isn't, there IS a difference between a "luxury" apartment and an affordable apartment and you can go even granular between condos vs...

How Tall Are Boston's Buildings and Should They Be Taller?

I think it's pretty clear, with the constant arguments over this same topic, that what each person values is different and that's okay as long as it doesn't hurt anyone

Winthrop Tower sits on land that is lower in elevation than MT. Considering how MT is only 6 ft shorter, it's likely WT will look shorter.

    COVID-19 in Boston

Sorry to dig up an old post but excuse me? When are schools responsible for making sure kids are not suffering physical and sexual abuse from parents/guardians? It's fine that one of the benefit of schools is reducing child abuse but the problem falls squarely on society failing to provide...

    Post-COVID Urbanism Discussion

It's a desirable aspiration. My point is that WFH allows more interactions with your love ones due to the additional flexibility is all

    Post-COVID Urbanism Discussion

I'm going to argue that this is the wrong perspective. WFH allows people to actually spend more time with their love ones because you get back the time you would have spent on commute which for some can be around 1 hr each way (and thus a total of 10 hours wasted each week). Furthermore, given...

Skanska Office Tower | 380 Stuart Street | Back Bay

Sorry yes, to clarify, I meant high-rise architecture and the comment is more to level set with some people here (i.e. put Boston in a slightly better light). In terms of high-rise architecture, we are not at the same level as NYC and Chicago, but most cities aren't and it's hard to hold Boston...

Skanska Office Tower | 380 Stuart Street | Back Bay

Boston was never a city of good architecture. Frankly no other major city in the US really is outside of NYC. Chicago, SF (thanks to their recent additions), and Philly. IMO this is Boston and no I don't think we can do better.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

I still can't believe that the E line was allowed to operate past Brigham on platform-less stops. Granted I've never seen an incident where a rider was struck by traffic but I have seen cases where cars hurdle through a stopped green line train with doors open and passengers just about to step...

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting you made it B&W and yes you are correct. I forgot that newspapers were the primarily channel for news in the 90s. How times have changed.

I know black and white photos are all the rage when depicting the past or for dramatic effect but Jesus, this building was constructed in the early 1990s, not the 1950s. I know, I know, first world problems.

It's also the lack of setbacks. Both Chicago and NYC have a large collection of mid-size towers that looks much taller due to the fact that they are set back correctly. That being said, much of the setback design came during the art-deco era, of which Boston seemingly missed out entirely.
