Connected/Automated vehicles and infrastructure in Boston

Breaking out from Moore’s Law (or more specifically Dennard Scaling) will change this some day: shameless plug for my company

MIT | Lincoln Labratory | Lexington

This is not directly comparable to the Intel fab in OH or other semiconductor fabs that have been making news lately. That Intel fab and most fabs produce silicon chips that go into most of what we all think of when we think of electronics. This facility is specifically for non-silicon...

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Passback and PoP aren’t inconceivable to have together, but it could become problematic. “Officer, I swear my friend Ted swiped me in. He got off the train 2 stops back…” Then what? You either need proof of payment or you need a plausible passback story? That’s just going to lead to weak...

    Somerville Infill and Small Developments

The identical form letters from the 2 banks are kind of comical. They have done nothing to investigate the commercial market and use their lack of effort as justification for a lack of commercial market. This whole thing reeks of amateur hour. I can see how the dispensary people don’t want to...

Do you have a source? If you are talking about the Shield, I believe it is zoned for 5 story commercial. That is a big loss for the neighborhood. EDIT: I found this link. Very disappointing. I cynically interpret “future” to mean “never”. I mean, if they build a one story building with a one...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

I’ve been frustrated with very irregular headways for buses for quite a while and I was hoping this latest schedule update would show some improvement for my morning commute on the 89. It didn’t. Can anyone explain why buses are scheduled to be bunched from the get-go? I certainly understand...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Ever ride a Red Line train to/from Kendall pre-pandemic? The thought of increasing passenger load w/ transfers from Blue is eye-watering. Granted RLT is supposed to increase capacity and reliability, but at best that bring us down from shocking Tokyo-level overpacked trains and waiting on...

Two Congress | Bulfinch Crossing East Parcel | West End

The subway head house is almost invisible in these renderings and has no orange/green signage in accordance with T design standards. I can only assume that is an oversight of detail and the T will chime in at some point to provide guidance.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

No, it’s double. The perspective is hiding the nearer tracks, but you just make out one rail.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

I will be disappointed if these get built as rendered here while GLX got stripped to the bone. I know that each project has a different story/path from beginning to end, but it’ll be hard to swallow the difference in cost/ridership if these palaces are built.

    Please stop.

Have you ever heard the expression “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar”? You can counter a negative message with a positive one without lecturing people and, more importantly, without extrapolating far beyond the information you actually have about the people your are talking with. You...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

No doubt that an OL branch would redirect a lot of bus passengers and change Malden Center from a singular sink to one of many.

    Constitutional Freedoms Thread

Is this a topic you really want to discuss on an architecture forum? I don’t mean that it’s unimportant, but maybe AB isn’t a good place for it.

    Boynton Yards | 99-101 South/808 Windsor | Somerville

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me can comment further, but I think the reason you can’t just make the existing street grid better is because utilities follow the streets. It would be very expensive to dig up utilities and replace them, especially if they have a long useful life...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Absolutely. Cycling next to a barrier is very different than having open space there. And a pedestrian can always step off the path at a particularly congested moment. I would estimate that a barrier costs you about a foot of width in how it feels. On each side.
