One Post Office Square Makeover and Expansion | Financial District

I saw the red panels in person the other day. They really seem out of place. Out of place on this building, out of place for PO Square, and even out of place for Boston in general. The saturated, primary RED is harsh and jarring. The color palette of PO Square is all beige, brown, muted red...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Thanks for that video. It confirms my concern that 10 feet (walled on both sides) is extremely narrow for a shared-use path. It is probably comfortable for an exclusive bike path, but the 8 foot lane in the video would be almost impassable to a cyclist if there were pedestrians doing anything...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Not really, Lol. I proposed the City of Somerville (or any municipality acting unilaterally) buying T passes for Somerville residents. That is not the same as making the T free, it is distinctly different in many ways. It has many of the benefits and avoids many of the downsides. Most...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Over on the GLX thread people got talking about making the T free. Several progressive local politicians are talking about it too. However, there are many well known downsides to 100% free transit with no access restrictions (e.g. vagrants edit: hooligans, graffiti). So here is my Crazy Transit...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

I think he means that the GL appears to go NW from Kenmore. Of course that is only on the spider map and isn't real. Nothing is perfect, but I think Park St. & North isn't bad. What happened to Inbound/Outbound?

Office Expansion Planned for Marketplace Center at Faneuil Hall

Hard to be sure without seeing any plans, but this sounds like a great idea! The corner of JFK/Surface and Clinton is very unsatisfying. A more urban streetwall at that corner will hopefully have a psychological effect to slow traffic turning from the ramp onto JFK/Surface. That ramp was poorly...

New Red and Orange Line Cars

Yes, to be clear, that train was in revenue service. I rode it from DTX to State this morning.

    The New Retail Thread

Does anyone else think steakhouses seem really old fashioned? I’m a pretty avid foodie and eat at restaurants of all price points, but never at steakhouses. I don’t even hear people talk about them. And yet they seem to be popping up like weeds. Maybe tourists eat at them? Or an older...

    General Infrastructure

The existing traffic lights are one of the problems that is being fixed. The lights were always just an afterthought/bandaid for a sloppy, car-centric road design. With only one narrow lane of traffic to cross at a time, pedestrians will have no trouble crossing in a short time. And the...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

The 0.25-0.5 mile radius around a CR station is a remote extension of the city. It should either be a walkable village/town center or a park-and-ride. Trying to mix the 2 is the worst of both worlds.

I suppose there are some serious environmental consequences to travel. I personally think the cultural benefits far outweigh the environmental costs.

    Kendall/MIT Infill and Small Developments

It certainly isn’t beautiful, there is something very “MIT” about it. Clean, simple, functional and also a little mysterious. I don’t like it per se, but I don’t hate it.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I’m not an expert, but 1 minute sounds like a painfully long time to sit around with the doors open. I can’t imagine any stop before Park taking more than 20 seconds or so. Park is a special case of course.

Skanska Office Tower | 380 Stuart Street | Back Bay

Reframe your perspective to when that “Boston” building was originally built. There was someone at the time commenting that it wasn’t a real Boston building - it speaks more of Buffalo or Cincinnati.

Suffolk Downs Redevelopment | East Boston/Revere

Pretty poor ground floor activation in that render. Looks like how we used to build in Kendall 20+ years ago. There is a big fancy plaza across the street with a little kiosk. That would be a decent amenity for an office park, but pretty bad urbanism in my opinion. Do better please. Maybe, if...

    Green Line Reconfiguration

Not a bad idea, if and only if you want Porter to be the end of the line forever.
