    Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

At least they put the curb cut on Portland St. This is a small and awkward parcel, but I think is a good spot for a small hotel.

This is one more in a long line of poor decision by the city that have relegated this neighborhood to "hellscape" status. I know this area well too. It is not unreasonable to suggest that over the decades they could have razed a few buildings, redone a couple streets, and added at least a...

    Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

Certainly not with decision making like this. Inman Square is a 15 minute walk from a station too and has a legacy of light industrial use. But we don't just write it off as a lost cause, we transform it slowly making sure to take a step in the right direction with each change. This is...

Holy crap, that is abysmal urban design. How did this ever get approved?!?

Boston's children, fewer and fewer of them

Here is a theory: I think I see a reflection of reurbanization and gentrification in this map. The places with the most money are the places seeing increases in families (blue) - very wealthy families that wouldn't have picked downtown living 20 years ago, but it has become fashionable now. The...

Uber & Lyft as a source of congestion

Yeah, but how do you get a taxi? We never had enough taxis to have a fully functioning "hail a taxi" system. Hailable taxi's only served major destinations which is fine if you are partying on Landsdowne St., but gets you nothing if you are 4-5 blocks away or godforbid at your home in a...

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

Thank you for that. I didn't have the patience to state the obvious myself I have to say though, it makes my head hurt to think about the cost associated with stringing together these simple machines. Whatever that cost is, it is less than developing a hydrogen economy...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

What if the T followed Caltrain's lead... exactly? Could they say "I'll have what Caltrain is having" and thus build momentum for a supply chain for a particular model? Sure it was customized when Caltrain bought it the first time, but if we buy it and then Denver, Philly, etc all buy the same...

Except for all the auto trips it adds to the streets of downtown Boston... As a pedestrian, I find that disruptive.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

I’m not saying a train along 128 is a great idea, but it’s not a bad idea because there are no more jobs along 128. I suspect there are as many or more jobs and homes there than 20 years ago. Just because the trend is for businesses to relocate to the city doesn’t mean that they all have. Not by...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Why is monorail quieter than HRT? If it’s quieter because it runs slower... well you can run any train slower to make it quieter. There has to be some shortcoming or trade-off for why hardly any monorails exist. If they were such a good idea, there would be more of them.

Maybe a restaurant or cafe can use the Congress St. plaza for outdoor seating?

MXD II (Google Kendall) | 325 Main St. | Kendall Square | Cambridge

I walk past this everyday using Kendall Station. With the building gone, you catch this great view of the Proto between the remaining buildings. It feels much more "big city" than Kendall ever has before. Once the monster-size Google building fills in this hole, its going lose that "pop." I wish...

    NYC Architecture and Development

So much for "Never Forget"... Subtractions from the skyline aside, starting with the New York Times and BoA buildings in early 2000's through today, I think the New York skyline has been in a constant, jaw-dropping state of flux for 20 years. Ours has been a nice change, but it isn't remotely...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

I did some googling and I can see how it works. You split the stops to opposite "far sides" and it doesn't eat eat up excessive ROW width. I don't know Columbus Ave well enough to know if this is a reasonable configuration.

Regional New England Rail (Amtrak & State DOT & NEC)

Yeah, that looks scalable and cost effective. Way better than building high platforms. Its a surprise we don't use those at every train station in the world.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

I noticed that the Ball Square Station drawing calls out space for future platform lengthening, but it’s going to be 225 feet on day 1, right? I don’t recall anything in the GLT presentations mentioning 3-car type 10 consists, so why would the platform ever need to be lengthened?
