    Historic Portland Discussion

Thought I'd add a few more classics to Cosakita's historic thread with this overhead view showing Union Station still intact. Photos from Portland Public Library Archives.

Thanks Mark, there was plenty of minor league baseball played in that location during the past 138 years with some interesting names: Wikipedia

My idea of naming it the Fidelity Hotel may not have worked due to the potential of cheating spouses getting a room for an evening of frolicking. ;)

I'm guessing the 1930's, Interstate 295 added to the swath of land where the white house is in the lower center in the early 70's. Portland Public Library Archives

Portland, ME - New Construction Continued

I'm not too greedy and would be elated with a mere 20 story building at around 250'!

Good news even though I will miss the A321 versus the 738 but there will at least be an additional 100 seats to ATL. It will also return PWM back to the days not too long ago when there were 3 MD88/90's daily to ATL during the peak season.

Well said TC and I am happy that Jim Brady and the Fathom Companies are moving forward to bring this classic skyscraper back to life. The much needed vitality and foot traffic it will add in the Monument Square area is a win for the city and will hopefully lead to some positive improvements to...

Mystery appears to be solved and excellent research cneal. Your theory also makes sense due to the photo being from the late 1920's early 30's by looking at the automobiles and the Chapman Building which opened in 1924. The present day PWM was known as Stroudwater Airport until 1936 when the...

Seeing that the building is being converted to a hotel and views and natural light are important, I wonder if the developer will add windows to the blank portion of the east wall on floors 4 through 6? I personally think it would look a lot better but there may be some historical rehab rules...

Some of us were trying to figure out what the number 6 represents a few years ago. It is obviously not a bearing marker and the distance from the Fidelity Building to the airport is less than 3 miles? Maybe the new name of the historic tower could be the Fidelity Hotel.

The Casco | 201 Federal Street | Portland

The Union Station clock was also refurbished and placed on the corner as a tribute to the former train station that was demolished in the early 60's to make way for a strip mall. There was an underground bowling alley at the east end of the lot and it is rumored that it was covered over during...

The painting project in front of the terminal has been completed and the use of one color throughout provides a needed dose of uniformity.

Excellent review DesertMainiac and the wear and tear issues you witnessed have been noted by myself and others. The older portion of the concourse (Gates 1-6) needs a complete makeover including the ceilings and should be improved in a way so it blends in better with the newer addition which is...
