General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Wouldn’t it be great if we had someone who could do the long-term needs thinking AND had the ability to slap lawmakers into actually fixing things? We always get the same thing: ineffective demi-wonk appointees consistently choking back high volume truths, then singing the polically savvy ‘must...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Was there ever a possibility of a single portal where the three would meet... perhaps if the whole system was electrified?

New England Revolution Stadium | 173 Alford Street | Boston-Everett

I hope I got that right. Depends if you want to connect to the GLX or build to the GJL. If built, I could see GLX LRV eating Silver BRT one station at a time.

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

Thanks for the pic, Arlington! I'll quote my construction buddy: "All I need is wild hair and a Bobcat it'll be passable in an afternoon". ... And It's been that way since May -- not acceptable. Just 200 feet to completion. Honestly, If you don't mind the remote possibility of a misdemeanor, you...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Engineering dudes… if the Main Post Office on Dorchester Ave was removed would it be possible start a NB tunnel approach to the NSRL at the curve by Ft Pt Channel (behind the TWTX vents) that would run above or below the RL/SL tunnels? This is assuming full electrification which would allow...

    Boston Harbor Flood Protection Projects

I should be more specific in my concerns with a patchwork plan. The protection of everything behind all those ad-hoc, largely uninspected, individually contracted, variably fortified positions will only be as good as a the weakest point of failure... and we are talking about a LOT of shoreline...

    Boston Harbor Flood Protection Projects

Band-Aids won’t do. The problem is much, much bigger than Chelsea and Eastie. Water will not only come from the Deer Island side into the inner harbor. It will push into every estuary, creek, swamp, marsh and river and everything that borders them. if we get a breach in any thin strip from...

    Boston Harbor Flood Protection Projects

As I am also obese and likely pre-diabetic, I see a comparison. Though I'd readily vote for a tax increase and an awesome public works project waaaaay before I gave up carbs, booze, and started a regular exercise regimen.

    Traffic Signals

RGR is one of my faves - the Highway rule-Fu is strong with him. Another solid effort from him and a good share by you, reno. I do wonder how he would treat our streets (very small and pre-car organic), as opposed to those manufactured in the last 50 years - like most of his western US examples...

    Boston Harbor Flood Protection Projects

I would posit the cost of fixing Boston after the intial post-Thwaite’s event will likely be much higher than the cost of prevention (regional recession). So which one of us is going to run for office and explain this to the mouth breathing sociopaths on Beacon Hill? Some MBA in House Ways and...

    Boston Harbor Flood Protection Projects

I would love to be wrong, but with ground subsidence, sewer forced pressure and our unearned sense of invincibility, we're Thwaite's + king tide + any decent coastal weather event from FH flooding. To your later addenda on Winter Storm Grayson (above) we had another similar 3' scenario less than...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Good looking alternative. Slat sides are way better than exposed steel boxes on slabs. One page brief. State-wide rule. Side notes: Page 6 - (among others). Every time I see the Somerville/Cambridge/Boston town lines meandering randomly through a series of contiguous parcels, it shows we just...

    Boston Harbor Flood Protection Projects

Thank you for keeping the numbers right. I was using the same number perpendicular hoping someone would mention sea level rise as an Actual Real Thing (TM). Call it creative license but I wanted to highlight that it is a little too late for building faux-marshes as a solution for anything but...

    Boston Harbor Flood Protection Projects

Slick... Unless it's also 7 meters high, it's a very cool and necessary temporary measure until the real flooding comes from Thwaite's collapse. In the 3-10 years before that happens I'd rather look at this instead of the submerged trash and industrial ghosts of working harbor past.

    "Dirty Old Boston"

I keep thinking of some mustachioed be-monocled dare-devil strapping a monstrous proto-camera to an untested balloon, rope-anchored somewhere close to where Charles St an Beacon meet, all launching with a huzzah and the throwing of topped hats, a nod to this feat of aeronautical fancy!

    "Dirty Old Boston"

I’m pretty sure The Great Fire of 1872 is why you’re having difficulty negotiating the streets compared to today. 80 percent of that area burned and nearly all of the remainder was ripped down and built up later. Could someone confirm that we are looking North East-ish at Old South Meeting House...
