There are a examples on the internet of pedestrians, cars, and trucks going around under and through crossing gates in front of, and (unbelievable but true) through the middle of moving trains, what kind of technology in Cambridge prevents this idiotic behavior?

Guard rail, placed where you don't want the train to derail because of an object or drop off. More commonly used on bridges. You can see on the opposite track where the plates have been installed already, but not the rail. The reason for the weird short gap is there is probably a utility...

In that last picture someone has marked out rebar with insufficient or no concrete cover. I'm sure they will repair it.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I've always heard (but not confirmed)the Massachusetts policy is to not spend anything on maintenance after anything is rebuilt, just wait to it gets to a critical state of repair and rebuild it again. I don't know which makes more economic sense. Take a picture of the GLX, 93 Fast 14, Route 128...

Freight and General New England RR News

It seems you are advocating nationalization of the railroad system, indicating free enterprise isn't working. Your use of the term "the state" is chilling.

Only one mile to the legendary Chris Costionis " The Coffee Busta" the Big Dig put this Boston Legend out of business. The ultimate coffee drive thru.

Herzog hyrail welding van. It is used to carry thermite weld kits, tools and supplies (which need to be protected from moisture and vandalism) to the worksite on the rails. It can carry any manner of the numerous other tools and supplies needed for track construction. . There are rear hy-rail...

    MBTA Construction Projects

At an existing station like Government Center unless you expose the exterior of the buried structure to see where the problem is you will never fully stop leaks. Injection from the inside is the best way to attempt to stop the problem but its not 100% effective. Many times by stopping a leak in...

Your calculations assume the grade of the Worcester Line is flat (0%). Is it?

The Mass standard (and most other places) for shared trails is horses (if allowed )have #1 priority, pedestrians #2 bicycles #3 and everybody stays to the right. I've seen many signs on Central Mass trails indicating such . It's also a common practice here for bicyclists to call out "on your...

West Cambridge / Alewife Area Infill & Small Developments

Anybody else remember the shelter to the left of the Big Burger sign where a MDC cop would sit controlling by hand the traffic lights at rush hour for the Rindge Ave -Parkway intersection ? Today's technology can't even come close to replicating that. I have to believe that would be better...

    General Infrastructure

Who here remembers the 1996 Boston Herald headline "The Lumberjerk" the drunken Canadian truck driver who struck a critical structural support at the infamous "weave" at 93 SB/ Route 1 SB /Storrow exit pre-Big Dig configuration. He may finally be exonerated...

Looks to me that plywood allows the fence guys to stand on it and reach the top of the fence as they install it otherwise they have to work on the live track. . Maybe they are afraid they will damage the permanent covers or maybe the covers aren't available yet? Ballast obviously needs some...

Escalators exposed to winter elements are very problematic. Also the T insists on using sand combined with rock salt in huge amounts around stations .When sand is not removed it's abrasive, and retains corrosive moisture in electrical, structural and mechanical components.

MBTA Red Line / Blue Line Connector

I looked at Google maps to try to get an idea what could be there and was surprised to see how awful Google's alignment of the tunnels is in downtown Boston. I don't expect them to be perfect but they show the Orange and Blue crossing at Water and Devonshire St. Looks like they didn't put much...

Maybe if this happens Mitt Romney will come back to re-hang the "Reverse the Curse" sign and create another huge traffic jam for a photo-op like he did in 2004.
