It's structural as in it's the end support for the balconies. I agree that this looks really, really weird.

This is similar to Northeastern's West Village.

There a lot of residences and a grocery store. If it's all below the buildings, I don't see why that would cause such a harsh reaction.

"XMBLY" makes no sense. Trying to be hip, I get that but they can do better.

For me, sometimes the lines are way too long to bother waiting.

Especially that second floor unit on the corner.
