    Crazy Highway Pitches

I've always wondered what Route 2 west of Alewife looked like prior to its expressway overhaul in the 1960's - anyone have maps or historic photos or aerials that could give an idea?

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

New Alstrom Liberty trains for Amtrak's Northeast Corridor are moving closer to being in service (annoyingly, no mention of when in this story): https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/01/13/nation/after-years-delays-amtrak-moves-toward-faster-trains-northeast/

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

This is very good news for our regional trail network: Gov.'s office is allocating funding for some key projects, including a crucial link in the Mass Central Trail (the 128 crossing would now start construction in 2024!)...

    Biking in Boston

Agreed, but I think the key thing to keep in mind for Cambridge is that there's a plan, there's good policy standards for the design, and the Cycling Safety Ordinance mandates a schedule. Boston (and virtually every other US city) could learn from this. Boston's planning and policy is much...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Sounds like the 32 would be getting articulated buses when Arborway Garage is redone. Today you can luck out and get an articulated 16 on some trips, which could also benefit - one of the few bus routes that is steadily growing...

CambridgeSide Galleria Reno/Redev | First Street | East Cambridge

It ain't perfect, but I'll take it relative to the previous building - taller, more windows and better activation along Land Blvd...

Mildred Hailey (Bromley Heath) BHA Redevelopment | Jackson Square | Jamaica Plain

If you look at slide 21 in that deck, they say that the originally proposed extension of Lamartine St north of Centre St is not going to be continuous due to BTD's concerns.

Looks like those Berkeley St lanes and part of Columbus Ave lanes are shaping up well: https://mass.streetsblog.org/2023/11/20/eyes-on-the-street-back-bays-new-bikeways

    Biking in Boston

Shortage of materials / flexposts being backlogged, contractors's schedules, weather, order of operations (ideally you want thermoplastic down first, etc.), contractor capacity reaches its limit, projects going over budget and needing new purchase orders, etc. - these are all common reasons for...

State Street HQ | One Congress | Bulfinch Crossing | West End

I know this is being discussed elsewhere for obvious reasons, but I thought the last couple paragraphs were relevant here - sounds like the Government Center garage should be largely demolished by end of calendar year: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/11/09/metro/2024-mbta-shutdown/

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Sounds like Gov. Healey might be putting her weight behind camera-based enforcement for bus lanes (but not necessarily in a hurry): Full story here: https://mass.streetsblog.org/2023/10/30/legislatures-latest-attempt-for-automated-traffic-enforcement-is-missing-the-bus

Idea for fixing the housing shortage

Just read this story in the Globe about Arlington adopting compliance with the MBTA Communities Act - I know NIMBY's are a force to be reckoned with and not going anywhere soon, but I'm honestly surprised that there's been strong support for some munis up-zoning in accordance with the state law...

    Bowker Overpass replacement?

Thanks for sharing - couldn't make the meeting, but curious if anyone is organizing to oppose this happening at all? It's just crazy that the state is doing this - it's a highway widening project in an urban neighborhood.

This new planning doc was the other announcement that came out today with that bus lane plan - it's kinda beautiful: https://cdn.mbta.com/sites/default/files/2023-10/2023-10-24-bus-priority-toolkit-mbta.pdf

+ Washington St in South End (overhaul the SL corridor) + Hyde Park Av + Brighton Av in Allston (overhaul side-running lanes) + Malcolm X + Mass Ave, Cambridge - Arlington (as far as Route 60) + Columbus Av-Tremont St (in process) + Broadway-Alford St, Everett-Boston (Sweetser Circle into...

There's some red down in places but not many spots - there could be issues with the contractor or the schedule; not uncommon.

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

2.74 miles of the Mass Central Rail Trail (locally known as the Wayside Trail) is nearing completion in Waltham - sounds like the Linden St Bridge part is still a while off. Exciting to see a big chunk of this trail system get closer to Boston. Photos and some deets here...
