General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Here's another take on the idea of the T being swallowed up by MassDOT: https://commonwealthmagazine.org/opinion/merging-mbta-with-dot-is-a-bad-idea/ Have to say I agree with this because the T was a much better transit agency (def not saying there weren't major issues / mistakes made - like...

Arsenal Yards | Arsenal Mall Redevelopment | Watertown

In an urban environment with lots of congestion, transit signal priority is not gonna do much. Watertown should be doing what Boston did on Columbus Ave on Arsenal - fastest way to provide better quality transit to this area.

    MBTA Construction Projects

Yes, we are thankfully not like NY on this front - only 23% of MTA stations have elevators. Good report available here from TC on those accessibility issues.

City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

I gotta say . . . this looks disappointing sadly (I'll hold final judgment until it's completed though).

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

If you check the Bus Modernization webpage, they say they're trying to increase the number of 60-ft buses (doesn't seem to be a number or target included).

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

The T seems to be clear that this proposal would require changes to conditions on the ground. There is plenty of roadway space available in and around Kenmore Sq, so it's certainly possible for it to work with the city to claim some lanes for layover and busway. It would require some...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Yeah, agreed that it leaves the Hillside community with a bad taste in their mouth - all the more reason they should start doing the extension to Mystic Valley Pkwy the second the College Ave branch is done. At least most of Winthrop St and this part of S. Medford is within the 1/2 catchment...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

You can check out the static map for the T's proposal for BNR here. The new take on the 96 would be a game changer for Medford - much more of the city would get really good service connecting it to the rest of the system - OL (Malden Center), GL (Tufts / College Ave) and RL (Davis and Porter).

    Roslindale Infill and Small Developments

Could it be this proposed development? Looks like it's board approved.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

North-south service through Somerville is definitely a need and lacking here. Something like what's included below in red might be a service idea to consider: essentially a Haines Square to Central Square high frequency route via Fellsway, McGrath, and Prospect - stitches together Medford...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Yes, but the trade-off seems to be much worth it, especially in Medford. They get two new high frequency routes (T101, T96) with connections 7-days a week, virtually all-day to the OL, RL, and GL. Express buses are expensive and provide a very limited amount of service needs.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

If we take the North Station-South Station politics out of the equation, just from a bus planning perspective, it makes A LOT of sense to combine the 93 and the 7 (which this service concept essentially does). Individually, the 93 and 7 are very short routes, and provided good, but limited...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

The number of new buses doesn't directly translate into more service. There's a potential for more service hours just with the existing fleet (more service the rest of the day outside of morning / evening rush hour, late night, weekends). Big issue is having the staff to operator that.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Approximately 65 feet or so, if you're going by NACTO standards.

    General Infrastructure

I don't agree that MassDOT should be in charge of the parkways - their staff is still way too old-school when it comes to traffic engineering. We need to think of these parkways from a climate change perspective, not a highway planning one. In a lot of cases, they should go to whichever local...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

100% concur with this - for Orange Line and Green Line riders, Back Bay is way more convenient.

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

@itchy curious - has a Bruce Freeman - Assabet River Trail connection along the Fitchburg Line been formally / informally proposed by a public agency or non-profit? Another way of asking that is whether there's been some sort of feasibility assessment to gauge whether it's likely. Agreed that...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

This aerial is a sobering reminder of how fast this area has changed in a short period of time.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

This project is another great example of MassDOT (which owns / maintains most of Mystic Ave) not living up to the policies it espouses. Word was that Medford and Somerville wanted all-day bus lanes but the MassDOT office wasn't having it and this peak-only approach was the compromise.
