    Hall of Fame Nominees

I am just rehashing my nominations from last year because none won: 1) THE. WINTHROP. BUILDING!!!!!! - best building in Boston hands down and and it is frankly criminal it isn't in the hall of fame. the elegant curve, the beautiful color combination, the way it perfectly fits its site...

    Best Member Photo Nominations

This year I kept a running list of images I stumbled on that I thought were great. These are them, feel free to include or exclude as necessary due to the large number: The Hub on Causeway by Java King Green Line Extension by BeeLine State Street HQ by DZH22 MassMutual by Stefal...

The Alcott (née Garden Garage Towers) | 35 Lomasney Way | West End

I hate to say it, but I'm really not a fan of this building. It just looks so.... dated? The light colored precast, the triple height windows, the colors of the glass. It's very mid 2000s. It would be a fine background building but it is just so prominent and so... soulless.

MIT New 450-bed Residence Hall | 121 Vassar St. | Cambridge

I feel this building looks really sharp... in the literal sense of the word. The unadorned edges of the building seem to slice through the air and match up usually with the way the edges of the color blocked areas meet. I find it kind of intresting how this sharpness plays with your perception...

Nubian Ascends (Blair Lot) | 2164 Washington | Roxbury

While the overall design seems realy strong I have to be that guy that works in theater and talk about the performing arts venue. The stage, as currently designed is almost unusable. There is virtually no wing space, there is no cross over backstage, and the only entrances to the stage are...

Woaaaaah. Did you take any of these pictures? If so they could be "picture of the year" material

MassMutual | 10 Fan Pier Blvd | Fan Pier Parcel E | Seaport

yeah, I was about to say I was skeptical about the faceting of the panels in the renderings, but they look spectacular in these images. I thought it was going to be gimmicky but so far it adds an element of unexpected grandeur and rhythm to the facade. Of course we need to wait till the whole...

yeah... sooo... that Roosevelt Island project is just rendering porn. Off the top of my head I can think of at least 2 landmarked structures an entire college campus that was literally just built, and the last constructed work by Louis Kahn which woudl all have to be demolished for that...

Dock Square Parking Garage | 20 Clinton Street | Downtown

Those colors are fine and wonderful but need massive amounts of upkeep with either regular repainting or panel replacement when the pigments fade. The only vivid colors that building materials naturally come in are red, brick or terracotta, and green, patinated copper. That's why those are the...

Dock Square Parking Garage | 20 Clinton Street | Downtown

Have you thought about why there is a red palette in boston and why it seems to work well/alot of people use it? I know it may not feel that way right now, but Boston is a very dreary city. It is one of the rainiest cities in America and, compared to many of the other major cities, winters are...

The Beacon | 819 Beacon St. | Fenway

While the park does feel a bit awkard, but after looking at the plot it realy feels like they placed the building exactly where it needed to go and a park is probably the highest use at this point in time for over the tunnel. As with all parks what will really matter is the programing of the...

Eli Lilly IGM | 15 Necco Street | Fort Point

The more I look at this the more I become a fan. It is, pardon the pun, balancing lots of styles and concepts. It both an eye catcher and a building that blends in. It is stoic and dynamic at the same time. It plays with contemporary trends and the vernacular of the area. I mean obviously we...

Boston Landing | New Balance Complex | Brighton

It almost feels like planning for the Olympics is, and in this case was, way more valuable than actually hosting them. Boston recognized alot of possible development sites and pushed forward with some transit improvement because of it. I'm also thinking about the NYC bid from a while ago that...

Boston Landing | New Balance Complex | Brighton

This is veeeeeeery off topic but, seeing all these great new sports arenas popping up here just reminds be about that Olympics bid from a few years back. If the Olympics weren't so....demanding? unreasonable? questionably good for a city? I dont know the right terms to use, Boston really could...

The Bon | 1260 Boylston Street | Fenway

Except the Gold Dust Orphans explicitly do not perform in black box spaces. They are a small proscenium space troup. And they only have one or two productions a year. What will the space be used for the rest of the time, and when will the operator realize they can make more money doing stuff...

The Bon | 1260 Boylston Street | Fenway

Apparently applications were just filed to demolish Machine/Ramrod. A rendering I haven't seen is here too. I will remain very skeptical of "the Boylston Black Box, a 10,000-square-foot LGBTQ-centric venue for the performing arts." You can't just wish a queer space into being. Particularly one...

Fenway Center (One Kenmore) | Turnpike Parcel 7, Beacon Street | Fenway

I think this is going to be another "One Marina Park Drive." It is put up cheaply with strange design intent and is very present to begin with, but as the lots around it fill up the architecture becomes less prevailing and we mostly interact with it at ground level.

If any thing permanently changes to the built environment due to the lockdown I hope it is this. Let's take the space used to store cars for free and give it back to the people who live here. https://www.curbed.com/2020/7/10/21320182/streateries-outdoor-dining-architecture
