Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Is this the end of the line, or will it extend further south into downtown?

Given your handle, I'd say that tracks.

Red Line Extension to Arlington Heights

Local only. I don't see the need to install express tracks this far out, especially when RL stations are pretty far apart. A median el is out. It's a solution looking for a problem. It doesn't serve the towns well, and it's not like there is even space for large park-and-rides.

Those curves juxtapose well with the old brick building.

    Blue Line extension to Lynn

It doesn't kill it, but it is doing the bare minimum to leave space. I do wonder that, if a Danvers Line was to ever happen, if they would run trains just north of the current Salem station and then reverse back into the Danvers branch. Surely less than ideal, but it avoids this development...

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

That's the most overly dramatic take I've heard. The space is disappointing, but 1) it's brand new and tenants haven't moved in yet and 2) far fewer people are going to the office now vs when this was planned. There isn't the density of users yet. Give this time, I'm sure it will evolve nicely.

    Green Line Reconfiguration

BLX to Kenmore is a project that's at least 25 years down the pike. BLX to Charles/MGH will have to overload the RL so much that extending the BL (again) is the only option. A bit of a chicken/egg situation. I wouldn't worry about it for a while.

MBTA Red Line / Blue Line Connector

To be fair, because Cambridge St runs up a relatively steep hill, it's possible that any tunnel that would continue into Cambridge would need to start further into downtown. There's a reason that the Red Line crosses in a bridge (besides cost). I've always found extending the Blue Line through...

MBTA Red Line / Blue Line Connector

Boylston St made way more sense. Why build a subway line where half your catchment area is water?

MBTA Red Line / Blue Line Connector

Well, they DIDN'T build it. It was in a bad location, but it also could have been drainage issues.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

RAIL is cost effective. Subways and tunnels really depend on the ridership and land value. The Rockaway Beach Branch (I'm the co-founder of a proposal to reactivate that) was, as we feared, spiked. They reduced the cost a bit, but it is still waaaay out of line with other projects which include...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

My take is that it's a political document more than anything, and it's proof that the MTA has no intention of fixing its crazy cost issues. Many of these proposals were made to look so much worse than they are based solely on high costs, and much of these estimates are laughably high. These...
