    General Portland Discussion

I don't believe NNEPRA is going to build the new station; MaineDOT is taking the lead on the project, which I think means the station is going to be a government building. That being the case, tax-dollars-wise, the most cost-effective solution would be to renovate the existing Ferguson showroom...

    Failed Development Projects | Portland

I agree. That vision included, among other things, renaming Marginal Way to Bayside Avenue (which I hated with the passion of a thousand suns), and I imagine the median was part of that idea. The train was an initial idea for the path to take the Downeaster to Brunswick: follow the Union...

    Thompson's Point, Portland

I am surprised they are bringing that name back... the original Facebook page for The Forefront at Thompson's Point is still out there...

What's the scoop on that? Are they waiting for Sue Collins to send them a Federal present (they just got a nice one this year)? Is it just that other things like the extra gates and runway / taxiway updates have been more pressing? I know Paul's been looking at it for years and had a tentative...

    Scarborough, ME

I am sure that Scarborough would prefer that traffic between the Mall / Wal-Mart area and the Cabela's/Costco area use the Turnpike. The reality is that that stretch of road, from south of Cabela's to the Downs, is essentially the same as it was when my grandfather and I used to drive to the...

Skyline & Aerial photos | Portland

I don't know what you used for settings, but the blue of the water is amazing. It reminds me of how blue the water would be in the summer when I was at Auto Europe, torn between looking at the harbor (even with the BIW drydock) and doing actual work.

Idle chit-chat: who else remembers the old Fourth of July celebrations on the Eastern Prom? Climbing a greased pole, the whole bit. I wonder when those died out (and it was long before the current gentrification of the Hill, believe me).

    Biddeford/Saco Developments

I took the train a couple of weeks ago for the first time since Covid and it's amazing how much that area has grown! It's probably the most conspicuous change on the route since Haverhill rejuvenated. (Everything that has happened in Boston owes very little to the Downeaster, so I discount that.)

I am most impressed by our beating Little Rock. They're similar to us in that they're the primary airport in the state, but it's a larger metro and a larger state. Also, it's amazing how MHT has collapsed since they stopped being Southwest's gateway to Boston.

I don't see anything purely factual in his assertions that could be called "wrong". I like the plaza.

Cold Storage Facility Redev | 40 West Commercial Street | Portland

Shhh... be careful, someone could get an idea to move the SS United States here. I don't know about inbound commuting, I thought much of the hubbub was coming from the Tate/Tyng area.

Cold Storage Facility Redev | 40 West Commercial Street | Portland

I remember before the IMT was set up, some commenters were saying that they needed to prioritize public access to the water. My thought was, "What? It's been a railroad yard for 60+ years and was a coal gas plant before that. You start taking your children down there to visit the water and your...

    Portland International Jetport | PWM

Is Delta still considered the flagship or primary airline at the Jetport? Or is that even a meaningful or sensible question to ask? I know they historically had some sort of status, perhaps informal, stemming from their purchase of Northeast somewhere in the far away and long ago. (I ask because...

That's... probably not the best thing to say about a law firm  . But, my hunch it's an illusion stemming from the parallel lines on the building and the sign itself not being flush. A photo from the top of the Garage, or better yet an upper floor of a Canal Plaza building (not that I...

Portland Foreside | 58 Fore Street | Portland

There is a long-standing tradition in Portland that any proposal for the Congress/(Pearl)/Franklin/Cumberland/Myrtle blocks just misses the market. Just like the old tradition here, before the Maine forum was created, that any Portland project that got its own thread never got built.

It took me a minute... that one with the girl (ghost?) with the pink suitcase mustbe the view coming in from Gate 11, with the new addition on the left. Having arrived at one of the current outside gates on a very cold night this past April, and standing around on the tarmac (dressed for...

I agree about keeping them downtown, but that business card for Verrill is the most out-of-place, ugly-ass POS since they put a sign obscuring the cornice of the Commerce Building. It might even surpass that because it's just so lame. And I am saying that as someone who doesn't have a general...

Cold Storage Facility Redev | 40 West Commercial Street | Portland

I remember, when they first built the expanded facility, the developers wanted to imprint the concrete walls along the intermodal ramp with historical scenes, but I think it was the Public Art Commission that said they wanted to go with a more abstract theme for that area (??) . Hence, what...
