    General Portland Discussion

I never read the recent Comprehensive Plan update in detail, but in skimming through it it seemed that the downtown office space sector, or what I think of as the "people who wear ties and/or pencil skirts to work" segment, was almost completely ignored.

    Portland Passenger Rail

10-16 minutes for passengers to and from north of Portland (i.e., Brunswick / Freeport / new West Falmouth stop), per the MaineDOT report. Probably save a couple of minutes between Portland and Saco due to not having to cover that extra mile to PTC at slow speed. Also, NNEPRA would no longer be...

    Portland Passenger Rail

I recall that the NNEPRA BoD authorized Patricia to send a letter formally protesting the change, but I don't know if Amtrak leadership was amenable to leaving the Amfleets here or were just going to say "tough noogies."

    Portland Passenger Rail

As it stands, right now Amtrak wants to replace the current cars on the Downeaster with Horizons, a car that has a bad rep in cold weather. That will probably be what we have until the Airo's show up.

Any rail you traveled on in Massachusetts belonged to the MBTA, so if the issues were there that's on them :) .

Tallest building in town, can you name the city?

Yes, that's what I meant... For some reason the one time I heard them mention Terre Haute (not sure if it was the pilot or a later episode) as where the kids were from before their parents died and they were sent to Uncle Bill in NYC stuck with me.

    Portland International Jetport | PWM

I believe the brief period that Air Canada ran direct flights to Toronto leveraged the preclearance there. But you are also correct that, in the event of an international arrival via charter or emergency landing, Customs and Immigration are called in from downtown. (Years ago, my mother worked...

Rock Row (née The Ridge, née Dirigo Plaza) | Westbrook, ME

For those interested, these renderings and more can be found in the leasing listing at boulos.com. So far as the floor count goes, I chalk it up to soft demand for new office space. I am just glad that their current marketing materials still contain the bits that interest me the most: the cinema...

    Portland International Jetport | PWM

I will say, arriving on Friday night answered a question I had: how do they accommodate wheelchair users getting on and off a plane when there's no jetway. (Answer: they use a long ramp instead of the stairs. No fancy elevator vehicles for Portland!)

    Portland International Jetport | PWM

I wonder how much it actually costs to heat the building, though. As I recall from the open house when they opened the terminal expansion (and Paul himself guided my group), the expansion included a geothermal heating plant that a certain registered Professional Engineer (specifically a...

A question after flying in via Gate 13 on Friday: is part of the current expansion work going to turn Gates 12-14 into regular jetways and a connecting corridor, replacing the current temporary classrooms setup?

Tallest building in town, can you name the city?

I am currently on my way back from Bingham where I saw totality. And here is a sentence you will never read again: I am stuck in a traffic jam trying to get into North Anson. And yes on Family Affair, although you forgot Cissy.

Here's a bonus question: what TV siblings were said to have come from Terre Haute? Hint: this question is biased towards the older denizens of this forum.

Skyline & Aerial photos | Portland

My recent return from vacation. I don't fly often and usually we either return eastbound or someone else grabs the starboard window seat, so this was only my first or second time getting the skyline view on approach.

Maine Public Broadcasting Bldg. | 25 Commercial St. | Portland

We could probably have an entire thread talking about the original Public Market and what went wrong. I think part of it was that it was priced and marketed for the folks working downtown and commuting in from Deering and the suburbs, but they didn't make the trek down the hill to buy groceries...

Tallest building in town, can you name the city?

The Scranton-Wilkes Barre area has the closest Waffle Houses to Maine, so that's something. (And I'm not being sarcastic, I really like Waffle House when I happen to be down south.)

    General Portland Discussion

I am not saying that Pam Plumb, one of the founders of GPL and someone who has given a lot to this city, is an elitist snob. But it has occurred to me that, even though the demolition of Union Station was the public impetus for the founding of GPL, I wonder how much of it was driven by outrage...
