You only do this if you are confident you are not going to modify the gate sequence in the relatively near future (looking at you C piers). If you have any reason to believe the sequence may need to change, you use a discontinuous numbering scheme (or at least gaps in numbering to accommodate...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

I don't know if you are aware of this, but historically the T subway system had a crude form of zoned pricing, exit fares. For extended surface stops on the Green Line (and street car predecessors) and the Braintree extension of the Red Line, extra fares were collected to exit at those stops...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

If the full system is rationalized, then it might make sense. You might also need a fairly large core base fare zone (and it won't be pennies) because providing the vehicle and infrastructure for any ride costs real money, even if it is only one stop. (Kind of the same way taxi's have a base...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

$20 million for what exact benefit? And there is ongoing maintenance plus the software upgrades for tap out calculations. (I know that sounds trivial, but given we are talking Cubic, they would charge millions up front and millions in annual licensing.) Isn't the real inequity that Lynn to...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

I thought they were tapping into the platform, not on the way out, but could be incorrect. Aren't conductors still collecting fares on inbound trains?

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

You are missing the point of all the extra equipment that needs to be installed and maintained in all the fare-controlled subway stations to enable tap out. $$$$ The cost penalty on the Green Line and buses is dwell time. The equipment will eventually be there with all door boarding. On a...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Tap in tap out works pretty well when service is frequent and trains/buses are not crowded. That is usually the case in the Netherlands, because many commuters ride their bikes. On bad weather days, when more commuters shift to trams and buses, and they get crowded, the tap in tap out slows...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Are distance based fees worth all the costs and penalties associated with their capture? In the Rapid Transit System is means adding fare collection on the exit side of all station exits, including exit only egresses. How else to you prove distance? On buses and surface streetcars it means...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

My observation as well -- almost everyone boarding the Blue Line at State or Government Center is transferring from the Orange or Green Line. There is massive transfer movement from every train.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

Exactly, I have been to multi-party meetings in France where the trade representatives of several countries were present (as well as private businesses). All the national flags were displayed.

Shreve, Crump & Low Redevelopment | 334-364 Boylston Street | Back Bay

The other aspect of the context is the location. For this prominent location, on a very noticeable Back Bay corner, overlooking the Public Garden and historic Arlington Street Church, this is the best Boston's planning process could do. Really sad.

Shreve, Crump & Low Redevelopment | 334-364 Boylston Street | Back Bay

As others have mentioned, it is oozing "insurance HQ" or "federal bureaucracy". The kind of building a cost accountant would love. (Just paint the halls institutional green or battleship gray.)

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Interesting effort. I have to say, given all the new and proposed development in the area, isn't this an example of where you just blow up the existing structures and start over. Band aides don't work when an amputation is needed.

The problem becomes meeting code requirements in the sections your try to keep open. You quickly run afoul of egress requirements and restroom facility requirements in a piecemeal rebuild. None of the restrooms in the C piers were designed for people with carry-on luggage, for example -- they...

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

Why do I suspect that a lot more needs to be upgraded in the Terminal C piers than can be done with "gate by gate" closures. (Like everything, including all systems and utilities).

    Logan Airport Capital Projects

I have to assume that Massport has not figured out how to rebuild the Terminal C piers while: 1) keeping JetBlue in full operation, and 2) at a cost that is not in the stratosphere (like the LaGuardia rebuilds).

If You Were God/Goddess | Transit & Infrastructure Sandbox

Exactly -- EL's through residential neighborhoods tend to blight the neighborhood. Happened in both Charlestown and Washington Street, South End in Boston. If you have more space, or can afford quieter structures and vehicles, it might not be as bad. My experience in Japan is they tend to...

Yes, I thought I heard that -- they let international connections continue, for example, so basically everything regional operating from CDG was not affected.

Generally these throttling of activities only work if politically viable alternatives are provided. France is a good example. Given their extensive high-speed rail network (TGV), they found it to be politically viable to ban commuter jet service between high speed rail connected cities. But...

    Green Line Reconfiguration

The connection Red Blue would not be great, but the tips of the platforms cannot be 300 ft. apart. The surface walk from Franklin head house to Old South head house is 200 ft. And the State platform extend further down Washington at least 100 more feet, likely much more.
