Commuters Ditched Public Transit for Work From Home. Now There’s a Crisis.

FWIW, when I was in Singapore, they were doing routine fare adjustments every couple years to catch up with inflation. (Though they also have a very detailed fare table with 20 possible fares or so, thanks to a fully distance-based fare with tap-offs on all modes.)

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

All door boarding is not at odds with some small card readers on the platform, though. That's exactly what Seattle does (although that's not a perfect example since they started having fare beating issues recently, to the point where they're considering adding fare gates back). (Image source)

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

For the data nerds, New York's MTA has released its subway origin-destination dataset: https://new.mta.info/article/introducing-subway-origin-destination-ridership-dataset AFAIK, no such data exists for Boston for subway stations in particular. The best analogs are BNRD origin-destination...

    The Official MBTA System Map

I had long wondered how many riders on the 117 use Revere Beach to transfer to the Blue Line as opposed to Wonderland, so I used this as an opportunity to do some data wrangling. In Fall 2022, on an average weekday: Direction Inbound (boardings) Outbound (alightings) Wonderland 300.5 335.4...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The biggest problem with this proposal may be that Medford/Tufts has limited terminal capacity, thanks to bumper blocks at the end of the station. IIRC, someone mentioned that during a past temporary construction schedule when they tried to terminate both the D and E trains at Medford/Tufts (or...

    The Official MBTA System Map

The only way may be to enlarge the gap between OL and BL (especially OL and SL3) in this area, which does align with the geography, aka Everett being a big transit desert inbetween. But this may be too late for you at this stage of the map.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

So I guess that's official endorsement of battery trains... Even in the Eng era.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I don't get why people are hating on the revamped 104. In fact, it's one of my favorite routes from BNRD. A direct connection from Logan Airport to basically every major neighborhood to the north of metro Boston? That's even better than 95% of fanmade rail proposals to Logan. The specific...

    The Official MBTA System Map

I think there is a good point that @as02143 is making: The E and OL paralleling for their entire route is probably overkill. I do think Symphony-Mass Ave and Boylston-Chinatown are close enough for a walking transfer designation. (The distances are even similar to State's long OL-BL tunnel in...

    The Official MBTA System Map

Nice! Only problem I'm seeing: The label for Prudential somehow became a lot less recognizable in this iteration, largely due to the line for the 1 bus. Now it suddenly feels like it's referring to either Hynes or Symphony.

A Reddit discussion of the merits of streetcars running in mixed traffic, which I think will be of interest to at least a few people here: https://www.reddit.com/r/transit/s/6Z3qtyLs1y

    The Official MBTA System Map

Given that the D's stop spacing on that segment is geographically much wider than the C, I'd consider it a feature, not a bug. I believe @TheRatmeister is plotting the combined SL4/5 under the bus network redesign, which becomes a single route that terminates at South Station after stopping at...

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

I think both of you have a point. Economically speaking, filling in the entire canal is much costlier than building low bridges (or filling in small parts of the canal), with little more benefits. But the main challenge in any of the proposals isn't economical, it's political. All three have...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Somewhat related, but I'm not sure whether to put this in the SCR thread here or the generic Commuter Rail thread: I've been collecting paper schedules for commuter rail and buses since 2022. I just noticed that on the latest Spring/Summer schedule dated May 20, 2024, the paper schedule has...

Thanks!! While we're on this topic, does anyone know if similar specifications exist for the Green and Blue lines (and possibly the Silver Line Transitway tunnel), either about their cars or route profiles? I've been trying to find information such as minimum turning radius (particularly for...

This also reminds me of how people were saying the Lechmere Viaduct was designed for 50 mph. If the increase in speed limit on the Red Line is successful, maybe it will pave way to similar treatments on other parts of the system like this?

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

Slightly off-topic here, but I think this conversation about the Cape's demographics points to increasing needs for public transit and other means of non-car travel, both within the Cape and connecting it to other parts of the state. With a significantly older population that's expected to age...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Seattle's Sound Transit conducted an internal study of grade-separating 4.5 miles of its light rail system that currently runs in the road median. The cost estimates are: $1.7 billion for an El 30 ft above ground ($0.38 bil/mi) $1.1 billion for a trench ($0.24 bil/mi) Note that as an internal...
