If You Were God/Goddess | Transit & Infrastructure Sandbox

Needed a map for clarity (also added in the Lechmere terminal). A route from Kendall to LMA can easilly swoop in the Kenmore terminal, so Kenmore already has that advantage going for it. The route to Sullivan can be routed to Lechmere before cutting across the Inner Belt floodplain to get to...

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

Also, that 30 minute service ends at 5:03 p.m. on weekends before it moves to hourly service. On weekdays, the 30 minute service extends to 7:00 p.m. and all the way to 8:47 p.m. outbound. Plus the fact that the headways extend to 45 minutes for 2 trips around noon to accommadate freight...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

M1 Metro in Sydney finally has its extension from Chatswood through Sydney CBD opened today. Additional extensions in 2025 as well (map). The first trip left Sydenham at 4:54 a.m. AEST and north from Chatswood at 4:38 a.m. AEST on the morning of August 19th, running on 15.5 kilometers (~9.6...

Commuters Ditched Public Transit for Work From Home. Now There’s a Crisis.

A few more news articles got published in the media field tangentally related to this topic that I've ran across. These articles are all new, with publish dates in August 2024: Boston’s Broke and Broken Transit System Hurts Downtown Recovery...

GTFS for Fall 2024 is out, meaning a full analysis of Fall 2024 service changes is now possible. (scroll down for some good subway news) MBTA removes more bus trips from the Fall 2024 schedule than new bus trips added, meaning a reduction of scheduled bus service this fall . Subway...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The B was extended from Park to Gov'y since without it, it breaks the color transfers from Blue Line bus transferees with Kenmore bus transferees. It's not as bad as the broken Kenmore bus transfers <---> OL northside bus transfers since Kenmore still had 2 branches feeding into Government...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Aren't the platforms at North Station a lot longer? I feel like I recall having to walk quite a ways from the southside entrance at North Station a lengthy ways all the way to the front of the two set streetcar on the Lechmere bound track. I'm not sure but perhaps at North Station they may be...

This is what makes the T's choices for restored Fall 2024 service on many bus routes questionable. Almost all of the restored services are during peak period rush hours, not off peak. Of course, it makes sense that COVID changes travel patterns, but you've confused my post about the 65 and...

New Red and Orange Line Cars

Looks like they finally got that red line trainset, that was involved in the medical emergency at South Station in late July, back in service now, if that is correct. Seems like it was put out of service for 3 weeks due to that incident.

BNRD was going to raise the number of bus operators by 440 above the pre-pandemic count of 1,819 bus operators, which would mean a total of 2,259 bus operators needed to run BNRD. The T will need to hire an additional 700 bus drivers beyond that set out in BNRD phase 1. So the idea that BNRD...

BNRD was originally supposed to begin in 2023, and the MBTA was originally going to raise bus operator hiring to fill in a total of 1,923 positions to cover Round 1 of BNRD, up from 1,819 positions pre-COVID. After the announcement that BNRD was postponed to December 2024, the MBTA slashed the...

I am waiting for the GTFS schedules to be released in order to analyze those "improved schedule reliability" statements. At this time GTFS schedules are not out yet. The reason for this is that I need the ability to count the total number of scheduled trips, and for key bus routes and subway...

Transit Planning $h!tposting (Ideas so bad, they're good)

This is the "ideas so bad they're good" thread. I mostly wanted to see if the network of core corridors changes a bit. Obviously because the bus grid differs from the rail grid. Buses can't go on the railroad tracks. Trains cannot follow the street grid if the railways go their own ROW.

Fall 2024 service changes https://www.mbta.com/service-changes/fall-2024-service-changes Some of the service cuts from the great bus service massacre of Summer 2023 ARE STILL NOT RESTORED. Weekend service on the 57 and 108 buses were cut in Summer 2023, and in fall 2024 this change still isn't...

Post about the T104 changes under BNRD that I've found on zombie reddit today. The article is essentially positive about the T104 for the most part. Nothing major. (I'm just crossposting this from zombie reddit. https://bostontransit.substack.com/p/better-bus-project-route-104

Transit Planning $h!tposting (Ideas so bad, they're good)

Another terrible idea: Extend every single bus route on the MBTA system all the way to Downtown Boston. No more terminating at 1:1 cycled terminals. Give everyone a one seat ride to downtown Boston. Only a single transfer systemwide! People talk about how Lynn bus terminal is broken and...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

GLX already has a horrible bunching problem just with the at-grade junctions on the Huntington Ave. Branch. Northbound GLX service routinely has 20 - 27 minute gaps in service, followed by 2 or 3 trollies at once, with many of them going express. Otherwise it would be near impossible to run SUAG...
