MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

Oh yeah, forgot about that pesky extra G!

I get it, the shuttle buses need to run, it costs a lot. But think about if we didn't have this maintenance backlog. This could be a decent down payment for an OLX+1 to Roslindale (or insert low hanging project of your choice).

    Biking in Boston

I stopped using it once the Tremont protected lanes opened. And now Boylston St. is a similarly useful alternative. But you are absolutely right -- Columbus is atrocious between Mass Ave. and Berkeley St. The parking protected sections on either side of that are good, but the entire corridor...

It also makes no sense to me. Is it the same cost for both Zone 1 and Zone 2? Why have both? Maybe I'm just not interpreting the key correctly.

I agree, this is the way to do it. I visited Prague back in the 90s and was really impressed by the night tram service, which was based on completely different routes from the day time service. The night trams hit every stop, but followed much less direct routes in doing so. Something similar...

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

I'm not in the transportation industry, which may operate under different rules. But I work in a finance/accounting adjacent position that deals, among other things, with how we account for major equipment leases. The rules have begun to change, and GAAP is more and more requiring that leases be...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Conceptually I like it. My guess is that the tunnel dimensions simply won't work with any FRA compliant trains in existence.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

I've assumed all along that this was the rationale, but it's definitely good to get the confirmation. It will probably be a lease from the manufacturer or perhaps some middleman, but the actual equipment will be new, like a traditional procurement. The question isn't about used or idle BEMUs...

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

Hooray, they are doing it! But as others have pointed out, 2 additional trains per day is entirely inadequate. And it's extremely frustrating that to get that minimal bit of additional service is going to take 5 years to achieve.

But the MBTA doesn't make these decisions in a vacuum (or at all, as in the case of South Coast Rail). These aren't spending problems, they are funding problems. Beacon Hill mandates that the 'T provide certain services, but doesn't follow through with adequate resources for those services...

This has been my experience in China, Japan, Czech Republic, and Russia. I'm sure it's fairly typical.

    MA Liquor Laws

I think the issue is that by ZIP code, Allston and Brighton have a lot more licenses than other non-downtown neighborhoods. So the need is not as pronounced. But as @BOS2BON alludes, the area is represented by a powerful legislator, so something had to be offered to him.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Thank you for highlighting this. I've long been concerned that none of the Washington St. routes that stay on Washington St. south of Rozzie Square have been deemed important by the BNRD, but hadn't realized just how much the service has been and will be reduced. I live close enough to the...

The article you linked to was also the first I had heard about the idea. On the one hand, as somebody who tries to pay a lot of attention to this sort of thing, I wonder about the outreach given my prior ignorance. On the other hand, it's not quite close enough to where I live for any targeted...

    Addressing the housing crisis

This is good news for Boston. At current residents per unit rates, that will be enough to house 18,000 people which is probably enough to keep up with demand, maybe even lighten the pressure a bit. For the US as a whole, though, it's bad news. That's enough new housing for about 0.4% of the...

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

More than that, I suspect a great deal of people figured a New Bedford and other places only reachable by bus weren't worth giving a damn about. That's kind of where I was at for a long time regarding the area. Even as an avid Moby Dick fan, New Bedford seemed both remote and uninviting before...

There is actually a shuttle bus that operates between A and E for the purpose of connecting passengers without needing to leave the security zone.

    Addressing the housing crisis

Just using the growth rate differential, you don't see why that would happen? If Boston has a faster growing population of more expensive to educate students, Boston is going to have a larger growth in per student costs. It's just math.
