General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I can only speak from 1979 on. Conrail ran two freights - The regular WNBP-10 (which was B721, but based out of NEP) and the so-called "Cottage Street" job that didn't run much at that point. Of course, CR used the passing siding between Mass Ave and Memorial Drive as overflow storage of...

Here's the final B721 run... Monday, 11/05. CSXT 6232 with 3 loads and 16 empties Framingham to Everett. Went back with 8 loads, clearing the Grand Jct Running Track for the last time at 11:43PM.

This auction is only for two units - 1009 & 1014. They are down at we like to call "Area 52", a MDOT facility in the old Harris Rebar building just south of SEMASS. Scrapping will occur there. If you scroll on all the thumbnail images, you'll see a photo of the building. D

North Station, Charles River Draw, & Tower A

Tracks 1 & 2 are the shortest tracks, with Track 8-9-10 the longest. A good example of some operational problems was yesterday with the Downeaster. 686 was 12 car lengths long due to extra equipment for Southampton Street Yard on the rear. Wouldn't fit anywhere and had to wait for No.331 to...

The track hard along Boston Sand & Gravel is called the Tuttle Track and is active. Stub ended unfortunately. We were using to store an Amtrak set last month during the day. Mainline 1 ends at the Back ladder (Gilmore Bridge) and hopefully gets restored to FX one of these days.

Another part of this project is the complete rebuild/redesign of the front and back ladders of Tower A Interlocking. They are badly in need of work. Reconnecting Mainline 1 at the Back Ladder would be a no brainer too. D

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Re: Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail I would argue that framing the SCR project as just for New Bedford and Fall River has always been wrong. This is also about the towns and Taunton along that corridor - even if Raynham, Easton and Stoughton won't admit it. Ridership from Taunton north is...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Re: Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail The layover yard will be in the current yard along with some designated freight tracks that have been in use off and on - mainly for the PCB sludge removal traffic. The Maritime Terminal will be getting rail service again as soon as the bridge...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Re: Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail Actually plans were drawn for connecting the Watuppa Branch to the Fall River mainline. The tunnel portal would have been just south of Bowenville Station around Davol Street (I think). I have some copies of the plans packed away. Another proposal was...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Re: Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail No...The line from New Bedford to Fall River was/is the Watuppa Branch (13 miles long). The Fairhaven Branch ran from Tremont to Fairhaven and never connected to New Bedford. Any Providence service mentioned in this thread, would be north to Myricks...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Re: Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail Not seeing the Providence commute. Even if it was considered, that group in Norton (CCATS) would rise up again and kibosh it. Not to mention the element in Taunton raising the fear factor of their city being "cut in half". As I said in a letter to the...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Re: Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail Another hypocritical fact I point to is the massive footprint of RT 495 between RT 24 and RT 95. We could build a four track mainline down the median, let alone the shoulders. And all the wetland areas it crosses with no five mile bridge. D

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Re: Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail Thanks F-Line....Not to mention the fact that MBTA Commuter Rail has no electric trains to begin with. Infrastructure support for it would add even more money to the project! And if anyone, including the folks down here in SE Mass, think the Middleboro...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Re: Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail As a railroad employee for 35+ years commuting from the hinterland here in Greater New Bedford, I can only say I've watched RT 140/RT 24 go from a sleepy highway to a busy, congested mess at times (no so much RT140). So much for Providence. I am sure...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

Re: Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail It became "billions" of dollars due to the constant delaying of the project and nutty requirements like "electric" locomotive stance of the Army Corp plus the things like the needless five mile trestle through the Hock. I could go on and on since...

North Station, Charles River Draw, & Tower A

Putting an attached ped/bike bridge on the railroad drawbridge is a terrible idea and just unsafe. And I am glad I'll be retired if this ever comes to fruition. Unabated passage could make it next to impossible to make rapid openings during boat season in a timely manner. Having seen the...

    Urban Ring

Just a clarification on use of the Grand Jct: 1) CSX operates Sunday through Thursday to Everett. On duty in Framingham 130PM. 2) Amtrak Downeaster equipment moves operate as needed. Until the recent PAR trackwork related service downgrades, they would normally run moves once...
