In general, I agree with you about a street not for cars.
But streets are also visibly public spaces. Superblocks can so easily be privatized and not feel like a place open to the public--a real street that looks like a street can help ameliorate that. Or a private open to public passage thing...

Wasn't there a effort to make BYOB easier? It isn't what we are used to in Boston, but certainly works well in other places. I remember going out for upscale dinner in Philly and ordering a pitcher of mixer for margaritas--BYOTequila.
Walking along Beacon Street by the State House yesterday I noticed for the first time that this building and the Millenium Tower are the same glass. So from that point of view it looks like one massive building. Didn't have time to snap a picture but it was striking
There is a lot of parking in this project--it's in the building instead of a surface lot. You can see a good plan on page 34 of this presentation. Whole Foods isn't going to give up parking even in a super transit oriented area.

Yes, the biggest problem with the current South Station is the over-abundance of advertising and sales kiosks. Cut as much of the advertising as possible and cut the kiosks by 50% so there is space for seating and people. And that's NOT what this operator does--they do quick and easy stuff not...
