    The New Retail Thread

The first community meeting about this occurred last week and apparently went well. I don't think there will be too many community obstacles for this one - I think there's a lot of desire for a grocery option in the square outside of McKinnon's, which is good but specialized. Some other...

Union Square Somerville Infill and Small Developments

I wouldn't call it a primo location. Highland Avenue near Davis is pretty lifeless with the exception of Five Horses and it doesn't get nearly the pedestrian traffic that you see on Elm, Holland, and College Ave. Many people heading in that direction will just walk along the community path...

Mayor Walsh Wants ‘Truck Side Guards’ on All Vehicles Contracted by the City A positive step for bike safety. It's low-hanging fruit, but I'll take it.

Was that the incident in July at Mass Ave and Columbus? There was never much follow-up reporting that I could find, and I hadn't realized that the cyclist was killed, as several initial articles said he/she was expected to survive.

Re: Somerville Soccer Stadium It's impossible to say which towns/cities they are having active discussions with when there aren't any active discussions.

    Biking in Boston

I'm not sure I follow. If you were walking from Alewife to Ball Sq, why would you be near the future Cedar-Lowell stretch of the SCP? You'd just hang a left on Willow, no? I don't see this having a big effect on bike traffic. The Lowell extension of the SCP will be popular with dog-walkers...

    Biking in Boston

Maybe it's just the nice weather we've been having lately, but the bike traffic on the Hampshire/Beacon corridor feels like it has reached another level lately. It has been super busy this week, even relative to normal busy standards. Glad they're finally handling Beacon St next year.

    Biking in Boston

I think a fundamental problem is that the average commuter-type cyclist must be significantly less profitable a customer than the average roadie-type cyclist. I'd bet there's a lot more money to be made selling higher-end road bikes and all the gadgets that are associated with it than there is...

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

I live in Ball Square near Tufts and bike to my office in the Faneuil Hall area every day. It's not that bad. The Beacon/Hampshire corridor sees a huge amount of bike traffic and all of it has bike lanes except for certain stretches of Beacon (which doesn't get the same amount of traffic as...

    Biking in Boston

I took my usual route to work today and was surprised to find that a new bike lane had appeared on the Surface Rd heading SE from New Sudbury St to North St.

    Somerville Infill and Small Developments

There's a community meeting in my neighborhood to discuss a proposed 19-unit residential building in the vicinity of Ball Square: This gas station is a stone's throw from the future Green Line stop. It seems a bit wasteful to not have commercial space on the first floor.

I went to the Beacon Street reconstruction project meeting last night, where they presented 75% design. Despite a series of contention meetings last year, the cycle track remains in the project. Most of the feedback last night centered around the Beacon / Somerville Ave intersection (which is...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Re: Green Line to Medford to start in 2011 I think there's a lot of demand that's deterred by the overall lack of bike infrastructure. For plenty of people, clearly, navigating non-insane city routes like Beacon-to-Hampshire-to-Cambridge/Charles is okay. But for a lot of others, the...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Re: Green Line to Medford to start in 2011 Yeah. I don't see how this will be more appealing to much of the SCP's catchment area than taking Beacon/Hampshire to the Longfellow. That's not a perfect route by any stretch, but there's a bike lane most of the way, there's relative safety in the...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Re: Green Line to Medford to start in 2011 What exactly is the plan for proceeding past the path's terminus in North Point Park to Boston? Will bike traffic merge onto the Charles River Dam Bridge? Navigating a stretch of the Monsignor O'Brien and Leverett Circle seems like just the sort of...

New England Revolution Stadium | 173 Alford Street | Boston-Everett

Re: Somerville Soccer Stadium Nope. But the NFL is so huge it doesn't matter. For almost anything else, crossing the river to NJ is a big deal. It seems silly to a non-New Yorker like me, but it's just the way it is.

New England Revolution Stadium | 173 Alford Street | Boston-Everett

Re: Somerville Soccer Stadium The Red Bulls are doing okay for themselves at this point, but they are very much a niche in the NYC pro sports scene. Playing in NJ means that they are out of sight, out of mind, even though they have a gorgeous stadium. Numerous missteps in that franchise's...

New England Revolution Stadium | 173 Alford Street | Boston-Everett

Re: Somerville Soccer Stadium A stadium in Somerville would be immense, but (A) Kraft is never going to build it unless Somerville gives him a total sweetheart deal. I don't see that happening. (B) Even if he did, he wouldn't make the most of it because the franchise is run cheaply and...
