Bill Russell Bridge | North Washington St.

Alright, I did some more digging and found out what's going on with the welds. Kind of interesting actually: The bridge piers for this project are actually four individual piers at each location. This was a design choice made by the engineer. Most large bridges have monolithic bridge piers...

Ginkgo Bioworks | 1-3 Anchor Way | Seaport

Good timing Sidewalks! By coincidence, work to put the overhead utilities (at least in front of Parcel O) underground starts this week.

L Street Station Redevelopment (née Old Edison Plant)| 776 Summer Street | South Boston

In a couple public notifications and in discussions with the project team, they keep referring to the upcoming work as "deconstruction." Finally, I go, "Are you talking about demolishing the power plant." And the PM responded, "At Suffolk, we prefer the term 'deconstruction'."

    420 Rutherford Avenue | Charlestown

I agree. There is a plan to put Rutherford Ave on a diet, which you'd think would encourage more mixed use, walkable development. But if all the parcels are developed as office parks that plan will have been for naught.

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Yes and no. You want the concrete to cure to a certain strength, but there are ways around that limitation. As you said you could add more supports, but that only works to a certain point. A more common option is to use a "high early" strength concrete so that it cures to that desired...

Ginkgo Bioworks | 1-3 Anchor Way | Seaport

I thought most new development in the Marine Industrial Park had to support industrial marine uses? Anyone know how they keep getting around that (I'm not complaining, I'm just curious)?

Bill Russell Bridge | North Washington St.

I've been told by someone on the project that the welds at the bridge diaphragms are cracking. That would explain why they stopped making any progress with the stay-in-place forms. The good news is MADOT QA/QC caught the problem. The bad news is this sounds to me like a design issue. And if...

Nubian Sq. Parcel P-3 (nee Tremont Crossing) | Roxbury

"The BPDA will be seeking developers willing to commit to way more affordable housing than required for privately owned land as well as locally owned shops, internships and other programs tied to two neighboring high schools, arts, maybe a museum and lots of trees for the parcel. Specifically...

State Street HQ | One Congress | Bulfinch Crossing | West End

Because no politician ever got re-elected by cutting the ribbon at a spall-repair term maintenance contract?

Seaport Square (Formerly McCourt Seaport Parcels)

I agree, but Parcel G was complicated by the realignment of Northern Ave. It used to cut through Parcel G and now it frames parcel G. But some of the utilities still run though Parcel G. Not insurmountable but it takes time to relocate them. I think the last one is the one being relocated...

Boutique Hotel at 88 North Washington St | Bulfinch Triangle | West End

Thanks for posting HelloBostonHi. A couple questions for our resident architects (or anyone else who knows): Why the two sets of stairs for just three suites per floor? Is that a code thing? Will the contractor need to jump through hoops to comply with NFPA 241 and other codes for a mass...

....And they converted the building material to timber. I can't remember seeing another timber structure >10 stories.

To Charlie's point, those are not standard plate girders. The tub girders were chosen at least partly for their aesthetic. I do wonder how the white paint will age though.

Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

Bond Brothers Construction has a good sized contract (think it was like $28M) to do leak repair in the Silverline. You just don't see the work from the street level because it mostly happens at night in the tunnels/stations.

The V-piers are getting a horizontal topping pier. If you look closely at the last picture above you can see the plate washers that pull the V-piers snug with the topping pier. They must have post-tensioned them.

Gables Seaport (née Waterside Place 1B) | 505 Congress Street | Seaport

Hahaha! So it was either more than three weeks ago or I'm color blind.

Gables Seaport (née Waterside Place 1B) | 505 Congress Street | Seaport

That painted stair case is a great find Beeline. I walked up there three weeks ago and it hadn't been painted yet. It felt very dark and isolated.

    Hyatt Place/Ora Seaport (née Parcel K) | 315 Northern Avenue | Seaport

This is true in a lot of industries. If your show sells out every night it doesn't mean you have a good show. It means your tickets are too cheap.

Potential Exelon Mystic Station Redevelopment | Everett

Spoke to someone that would know at Wynn and asked how many acres they've secretly bought up. He said 75. Was kind of surprised it wasn't more.
